MISSION [ brass devil ] + plotting post

OVERVIEWOBJECTIVELOCATIONSPERSONS OF INTERESTOOC NOTES

OVERVIEW

Braccia is a bustling, prosperous city full of clubs, socialites, gallery showings where the paintings come alive — and of course, one mustn’t forget the extravagant parties where everyone who's anyone is expected to attend.

However, it has its darker underside: the city is actually ruled by gangster families, and one major business is gambling: on all kinds of things, but not least the fighting ring where mages and mercenaries of different talents face off against one another or team up against creatures brought in from all over the planet.

The city is divided between three gangster families: the Lionetta, the Featherstone and the Ti’shaaz. Each family rules their part of the city, and for decades, there’s been relative peace between them — but recently, there have been altercations between the families as the Lionetta are expanding their influence, and an outright war between them seems to loom in the future.

TOP

OBJECTIVE

The team’s objective is to get the orb. Viveca has been able to trace the signal to the Lionetta’s main headquarters, so in order to get the orb the team has to break into the headquarters and steal the orb they are using to expand their power over the city. To facilitate this task, Viveca has assigned the team members into different families and told them to make up their background stories as people new in the city seeking work, so that upon arriving in Braccia they will be able to blend in as members of the families.

TOP

PERSONS OF INTEREST

THE LIONETTA
The oldest of the mafia families in the city, but also the one most shrouded in mystery. The family controls all the liquor trade, and the speakeasies in the city are under their wing — but the most important currency that the Lionetta deals in is information. Nothing happens in Braccia without them knowing, and whatever it is you need to know, the Lionetta will find it out... at the right price. In recent years, however, they have started to expand their influence to fields traditionally belonging to the other two Families, and there are whispers that politicians in cities around Braccia are in their pocket as well. The leader of the family is always referred to as “the Devil”, and their identity is kept under wraps and only revealed to those closest to the leader. To enforce this, the family has two headquarters: one for the lower-ranking members of the family, and one for the top agents.

Greeting the new members of the family is Olexa Aster Lionetta. With a large fur shawl draped across her shoulders and a deep crimson floor-length gown to match, she seems more ready for a party than she is for any manner of business dealings. But don’t be fooled by the easy-going smile painted on her red, red lips. She takes her job as a high-ranking family member very seriously and has very little tolerance for shenanigans. Like all members of the Lionetta family, loyalty and honesty are the touchstones of their legacy, and Olexa has something of a gift for sniffing out the possible outliers.

MEMBERS: Cagalli Yula Athha, Clara Oswald, Clarke Griffin, The Doctor (11), The Doctor (12), Dusty Fields, Eddie Kaspbrak, Ellie, Erik Stevens, Goro Majima, Hermann Gottlieb, Jiang Yanli, Natasha Romanoff, Newton Geiszler, Peter Parker, Ratchet, Richie Tozier, Rosinante Donquixote, Shuri, Takeshi Kovacs, Wen Qing.

THE FEATHERSTONES
The Featherstones moved to Braccia a few decades ago, and since then have taken firm control of the arms dealing market as well as the east side of the city. Nothing goes on without their knowledge, and the Featherstone men with their grey suits and barely-concealed weapons are a common sight on the streets. On the side of gambling, the Featherstones rely on hard-won strength and skill in weaponry. Their leader, Brom Featherstone, is rumored to be able to squeeze liquid out of solid rock, and those in his service are both fiercely loyal and afraid of their boss.

The one to receive the new recruits is Bianca Mitchell. She is a woman who commands respect and has very little tolerance for insubordination. An ear to the ground and fingers in many pies, Bianca knows more and sees more than she may ever let on. She is curt and concise and appreciates those who are of the same mind. Though loyalty is highly valued in the Featherstone family, it is Bianca who monitors it within the ranks. Speak out of turn about the family and, well, sometimes people disappear with no real explanation. Her trust is hard-earned and she’ll be watching the new recruits with a sharp eye.

MEMBERS: Andromache, Athrun Zala, Harley Quinn, James "Bucky" Barnes, James T. Kirk, Kaidan Alenko, Keith, Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Peter Quill, Raleigh Becket, Renfri, River Song, Sam Wilson, Shen Qingqiu, Shinjiro Aragaki, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Wheatley, Yelena Belova, Zhao Tianyou.

THE TI'SHAAZ COLLECTIVE
Named after its founder, the group consists entirely of members with magic. On the city’s west side, there is illegal trade of anything and everything magical, and nothing changes hands without the express knowledge and permission of the Ti’shaaz. Their trade is magic, pure and simple, and they are constantly looking for new people with skills that enhance their power… or who will make them good money in the fighting rings. The Ti’shaaz is led by An’alya, a former court mage in the planet’s capital, around whose exile from the capital there are as many stories as there are tellers.

The one to examine every new member who joins is Finch. He’s a happy-go-lucky sort with his head always up and mind always open. Magic runs deeply in his veins, and though he’s never quite truthful with just how much he actually knows, it’s clear he’s very powerful just from the aura that surrounds him. Knowledge is indeed power and Finch is always excited to learn. New recruits will have their magical capabilities assessed by him personally, and will be given jobs that he foresees will suit them best.

MEMBERS: Aleksander Morozova, Alina Starkov, Daisy Johnson, Edward Elric, Eleven, Eliot Waugh, Finn, Katsuki Bakugo, Koichi Aizawa, Luo Binghe, Percy de Rolo, Quentin Coldwater, Rhysand, Sabriel, Sans, Soldier Blue, Syrlya, Wei Wuxian, Yzak Jule, Zelda Spellman, Zhongli.

CHERI
Aside from having to have knowledge about the families, the team needs to know about one more key player: Cheri, the owner of several independent clubs and the most popular gambling den, Cherry On Top. Cheri is very vocal about her clubs staying outside the influence of the families, a free zone for everyone to mingle without conflict. She is also known for her yearly birthday gala — something that is taking place a couple of weeks after the team’s arrival.

LOCATIONS

Braccia is a city where the old meets the new; skyscrapers rise towards the clouds while speeders and spaceships zoom past the round glass windows of an old library, and hover-trains take people from one dusty club or gambling den to the next. In the city, there is little that can't be found: hyper-modern tech shops live side by side with shops that sell wooden artifacts or furniture at prices that make you dizzy, or shops that seem small but open into large, magically-made halls full of amulets that sync with all your devices and holographic scrolls stuffed full of spells.

The Lionetta’s lower headquarters is best characterised as opulent: waxed wooden floors, heavy mahogany furniture that speaks of a long heritage and wealth on a planet where anything made of organic materials is rarer than gold; armchairs and sofas made of leather, and intricately-patterned, plush rugs.

The Featherstone headquarters is a large mansion, where everything dwarfs you in grandiosity: glimmering crystal chandeliers the size of a bear, dark, polished hallways and rooms, with not one detail out of place.

The Ti’shaaz headquarters is what one might expect from a place for gangsters with magic: just as grandiose as the two others, but with a twist. There are large rooms a hundred feet tall where all furniture floats in the air, a library where you call the name of a book and it flies to you, hallways lit by fires that seem to burn nothing.

OOC NOTES

This mission spans two months: September and October. Characters will return to the station once the mission is complete, around mid-October.

The team’s main objective is to find and retrieve the orb from the Lionetta family. To do that, they have to blend in, find information about the main headquarters and organise a heist. The first log will contain prompts for arrival in different families, the team's time undercover around the city, and Cheri’s gala.

The focus of this mission is cooperation and espionage: in the first log, characters will have to act as though they really belong to the family they’ve been assigned to, as well as find information and useful items / ways to facilitate the heist. To do this, there will be four NPC thread slots, and every character has one search request to use on any of the prompts in the first log. Multiple characters can also combine their search request and form a mini-team to be able to search areas that one character would not be able to.

If you want to sign your character up for a thread with an NPC, please respond here by September 8, 6PM GMT. You can sign up to talk to your family’s NPC or Cheri, or both. The characters will be chosen by rng.

The characters chosen will be required to make a game-wide IC planning post for the heist towards the latter half of September. In it, you will have a chance to divide roles for the heist and plan what your characters will do. In late September, an OOC post will be made where you can submit your character’s role in the heist and your ideas will be worked into the heist log in October. In that log, there will also be a chance for two characters to actually be the ones to get to the orb.

The sign-ups for getting the orb will be done as part of the OOC post for log 2. Note that if you get chosen for an NPC thread in log 1, you cannot be chosen for the second one.

The personal goals and family groups have been assigned, and can be found here. If you have any questions about your goal, please ask us here. In the same comment, there are instructions for what to do if you are unhappy with the goal your character has received.

Please use this post to plot for the mission and make your own plotting comments. You can use the form below:

Name: Babs
Character: Cagalli Yula Athha
Personal task: Steal three things by mission's end. Should be easy enough, but that's really not her forte. Anyone up for assisting is a-ok and a great way to get CR.
Family: Lionetta! Fancy ass crime family.
Plans for the mission: Not get caught? Espionage isn't her thing at all-- she's much more a charge straight in, or, if not, diplomacy person. With both people she knows from home on different teams, she'll be hesitant at first, but throw herself into it soon enough. Anyone to guide or potentially help or watch over her would be great. Or just someone new to partner with.
ETC: Despite her rough and tumble exterior, Cagalli's a princess and leader of her home nation, so she knows all about social decorum and etiquette, even if she loathes it. She can "perform" when she needs to, so acting all powerful and commanding would come in handy. And again, while hating it, she can definitely manage the fancy dress part of this scene. Also guns.

Name: Elle/[plurk.com profile] whyellewhy
Character: Soldier Blue
Personal task:
SABOTAGE. Blue may have to decide to rat out another planted member to keep the NPCs off his and others' scents.
Or worse - he may need to implant false memories to misdirect someone.

Family: Ti'Shaaz
Plans for the mission:
Blue will play off his "magic" as simply telekinesis - making an effort to keep his other more intense psionics unknown until it's necessary to help interrogate or verify the truth/falsehood of information passed to them. This may lead to the "sabotage" of his aforementioned goal, but he's more just protecting himself.
He can support other team members in that and misdirecting NPCs off their scent with some psionic tricks/playing lookout for those doing more involved, physical snooping, but he will need backup to escape (orrrr be left to get caught if ur personal goal is ALSO sabotage or violence).

Name: Lauren
Character: Rosinante
Personal task: Betrayal: leave a teammate in trouble when you could help them.

SO. I'm not sure what will come up yet but if anyone is interested in this let me know! Rosi will not enjoy doing this, but he's had to do worse in his line of work and feeling like shit to get a goal done is something he can tolerate.

One way I can see this going is if (when) families end up in conflict, he could certainly end up leaving a fellow orbmate to the metaphoric wolves if they're visibly on opposite sides. But same-side allies, let's chat too!

Family: Lionetta. Which is excellent, since information gathering and acting the loyal and honest role is literally his day job.

Plans for the mission: As a supposed Lionetta, Rosi is one who will potentially have direct access to information about the orb, though of course it's still not going to be easy. But I'm thinking this is an opportunity to go with his tried-and-true info gathering method honed over the last four-ish years of his career: acting as if he's mute. It makes him easier to underestimate, lets him take a role like "big dumb bodyguard" for those top secret meetings, and mutes don't spread secrets as easily, right?

Anyway we'll see if that's an option but that's my initial thought.

Edited to say OH ALSO if anyone wants to coordinate with him on a backstory that could be fun, like they're siblings or friends or something when they're both coming in to join. Lots of ideas there!

ETC: Literal spy, this is what he does. Also the silencing powers have all kinds of utility, and he has the intimidation factor going for him against any opposing gangs, I guess. They probably don't see too many people who are nine feet tall.

Character: rhysand
Personal task: TRUTH • Tell no lies for 24 hours.
ok this is truly an incredible task for rhysand and it will be extremely hard for him, therefore i would like to make it as difficult as possible. especially being that they're on an undercover mission, i feel like there's a lot of potential for it to be dicey and fun?? anyone who wants to help/make this harder on him, i would love to have u
Family: the ti'shaaz collective!! magic babies come together
Plans for the mission: this mission is really well suited for rhys who is very used to undercover and espionage work. i feel like he'd be a good asset to use for any characters who are maybe not as well suited for the mission, he can help them out 🥺 while making fake backgrounds maybe we can work in familial relationships/something like that so he can swoop in and save characters who need it
ETC: rhysand has shadow manipulation powers, as well as mind reading abilities! he's also a trained fighter. u know hes got it all.

Character:
Personal task: "SABOTAGE • Steal at least three different things by the mission's end." So... who wants to go on a shoplifting spree with Sabriel?
Family: Ti'Shaaz!
Plans for the mission: Be sneaky, get the orb, try to learn about the local magic because it all looks interesting and she wants to learn all about it. Maybe she can find a magic gun? Or at least bring some souvenirs back to the station.

Sabriel is not someone with much experience in deception or espionage- she can keep her mouth shut, but fooling people long term- especially suspicious mafia types- is not something she has much experience with. So this will be a learning experience, if nothing else.
ETC: Sabriel theoretically knows some glamour magic and a spell that's less about making people invisible and more about making them hard to notice. Also, her magic has a tendency to make technology stop working, if people want to play with that as well? Plus she can edit recent memories, if someone needs to cover up a slip-up?

Then there's her usual 'sense death and chat with dead people' if that's needed for the investigation, or just blasting stuff if things go that way.

Team magic! Sabriel can definitely back him up with physical force. (And magic, of course).

Depending out how things shake out, he could also find out about the creepier, necromantic side of her powerset?

Hey if the opportunity presents itself and Sabriel gives him a heads up, Rosi is sure down to like, "accidentally" turn his back or leave a door unlocked or something so that Sabriel can grab something. Especially if she speaks up over the earpieces or before the mission about not having done this sort of thing before, he's happy to help make things easier, haha.

Name: Akai
Character: Athrun Zala
Personal task: hotwire a car and go for a joyride, which I am living for tbh. He won't technically need help with the task itself, but I'd love for an assist on a) the moral dilemma of actually doing it (aka finding a target he won't feel as bad about) b) someone to keep watch and c) someone to go on a joyful zoom zoom with him.
Family: The Featherstones!
Plans for the mission: He's very good at following orders and playing the obedient puppet, so he can fake the part pretty well. On the other hand, he has a habit of speaking up against Bad Things he morally disagrees with and getting himself into trouble with it. So honestly a lot of this is likely to be a razor's edge for him- he could help others fake their role, or he could bone it up because he can't help saying silly things like "that particular murder is bad".
ETC: Athrun has had military training so he's good with weapons/fighting, and he's able to work electronics/machinery with ease, even those he's mostly unfamiliar with. Point him in a direction and give him a target, he's a bat you can swing at people. Driver, bodyguard, pretending to be someone he's not- he's done this sort of thing before.

Rosinante here would for sure be willing to help keep an eye on her! He's a spy, infiltrating crime families is literally what he does, and it's easy enough since they're assigned to the same family for him to help her out when possible.

Besides, he'd probably appreciate the social decorum and performance aspect, that's going to be a great skillset here for her to play up!

Name: Ireth
Character: [personal profile] cruelyethuman The Darkling / Kirigan [Secret name, shhhhhh; Aleksander Morozova]
Personal task:
SABOTAGE • Sabotage a fellow teammate's personal goal.

Family: The Ti'shaaz collective
It's a collective of magical folks! Do you think they put on shows?

Plans for the mission: To reveal as little as possible about himself and still get information from the other people. He's a general, he has experience in being a soldier as well as being a leader. He has magic (It is NOT MAGIC- it's Small Science, jeez), he's ruthless and he wants to win the orb. The Darkling can be charming (Uh, right?) and aside from a few, very limited people, he doesn't care that much about anyone else.

Anyone up for having their personal goal sabotaged? Anyone get a goal they just don't feel like completing? Anyone want their character to keep trying to get their personal goal completed and then have a large shadow man fuck it all up for them?

Doing a heist and working as a team will be a struggle for him. Sorry, it's been like a looooong while since he had to do that, but! But, he will. For the orb.

ETC: SHADOWS, and also, a strangely handsome face. The Darkling controls shadows to the point of being able to make a wall out of them, make a blade that cuts things and also, can be used to blind people in battle. I imagine they wrap around someone head like just a huge cloud of evil shadows? Canon doesn't say, so this is what I'm going with.

Name: Shuu [plurk.com profile] aetarna
Character: Goro Majima
Personal task: SABOTAGE • Cause a teammate to get in trouble with their Family. - he's gonna consider it a big yikes, but then also everyone are in this whole mess to undo their regrets. I'm interested in exploring this dilemma whether it ends with him attempting the task, but not being able to go with it, actually succeeding in it, or even forgoing it entirely. (Back home he wasn't able to kill for the when it was presented as a way to make things right—— but throwing someone under the bus? Sounds's easier).

Family: The Lionetta
Plans for the mission: Entrench himself into the Lionetta as much as he can. Probably by joining their operations in fields he's familiar with and can confidently shine (casinos, pubs, caberets/hostess clubs, you know, the entertainment industry — or headbusting. With or without politeness included). He knows he's just a newcomer, but also that fortunes favor the bold so he, ah might just try to weasel his way into good graces with some promises of making a run-down place incredibly profitable in a short time... If it includes kicking out different family from the spot (vice is clearly Lionetta's area of expertise, it's just cleaning) even better. If that works out, he'd prefer to surround himself with other newcomers, aka the Orbers...

I'm just spitballing here, but gosh do I love this setting.

ETC: Majima's been a part of yakuza, and worked for few years in the nightlife industry, so everything here is very familiar to him. But despite his recent public persona of courteous cabaret manager, he's veeeery much capable of large levels of violence... so if you need anyone for street fights, he can be there

I would absolutely love this! I'm not sure if Sabriel would be super open about her goal, but she'd probably admit it to someone- especially if she spotted one of the crew around while she was trying to steal something.
