AUGUST TDM.

T D M . 0 3

// PART I. all that glitters

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

The words, when they die out, leave you in emptiness — despairing, all-consuming, the kind that invites only the worst thoughts. What have you done? What have you agreed to do?

But then, from the emptiness, a golden light shines, and as you reach for it —

you wake up.

1.0   Perhaps it was less the golden light in your dream and more the insistent feeling of something metallic poking your side repeatedly, making beeping noises… wait, beeping noises?

When you look down, you’ll see a small robot staring at you and looking less than happy (maybe it has something to do with your disheveled state, maybe it's still mad about having to clean up after a certain pizza-induced mess). When you get up, it unleashes a series of beeps — and then furiously starts to scrub the floor.

Yes, the floor — instead of waking up in a bed, you find yourself lying on a hallway, white walls and white floor surrounding you. You don’t have long to stare at the minimalistic look of everything around you before the little bot starts poking you again, the word MOVE blinking across its visor.

So better get out of its way! Perhaps you’re on the hallway on your own and leave on your own… or perhaps there’s someone else, sleeping near you. Maybe do them the courtesy of waking them up before this little angry bot does! Or perhaps you’re the poor soul still sleeping and needing a rescue before the beeps make it to you.

2.0   If you need a visit to the infirmary, the situation may be more dire — perhaps there’s blood on the wall that you wake up against, your clothes may be dirty or ragged… whatever it is that has happened to you before waking here and has left you injured, it sure doesn’t create a reassuring sight. Best get to the infirmary as soon as possible.... with some assistance, perhaps.

Once upright, you may notice there’s something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

TOP

// PART II. the new staycation

So what else is there to do but to explore? Best get to know what is now your new home.

3.0   The most pressing question that you might ask yourself is: but where will I stay? The question is answered once you walk through the winding white corridors to the common area. Behind it, there are three types of rooms: those with one bed, two beds and four beds. The rooms are clinical yet clean, and sparsely-furnished — and most importantly, most are occupied. So be prepared to get some roomies!

4.0   You may find your way to the armory, where you can try to work the machine there to make yourself a weapon — perhaps to replace one that didn’t come with you to the station… or maybe you want to be prepared for the future. The recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: to put it to good use, head to the training room, where the entire purpose is to provide you with a space to spar and train to your heart’s content!

5.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself training, it’s time to grab a bite. For that, you should head to the kitchen, which… seems to be filled with a lot of leftovers: takeout boxes with an assorted collection of pizza slices, kung pao chicken, lamb curry... not to mention the entire tray of chocolate brownies. Feel free to eat your fill — or if takeout isn’t your cup of tea, open one of the large fridges to pick fresh ingredients and make your own lunch.

6.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds the characters can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion surrounds anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. A new addition is a flower garden where there once was a meadow — now, roses, camellias, lilies and dozens of other flowers sway in the wind, all varieties in their own flower beds, with a winding path of stones leading through them. The path leads to where a bridge rises over a sparkling, babbling brook.

Here, it is easy to forget you are in space at all. Perhaps that gives you comfort, or just makes you miss the real nature all the more.

7.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering over nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes containing assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging, and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to make!

8.0   If it’s items you’re lacking, though, some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi everyone, just letting you know there’s a new supply drop. It should be a little more… well, organised than before. If you made requests for items earlier, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on it. There’s clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books… even a couple of CDs, and a few cute stuffed animals. So sort through what there is and grab what you want, before someone else does!

// PART III. bright young things

(CW: POTENTIAL BODY MODIFICATION)

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room.

Step past the threshold and the doors will slide shut with a quiet woosh. Nothing suspicious; nothing to worry about. But before you can really get a sense of your environment (a grey, large-ish empty room, no furniture, no discernable objects to provide markers), the room goes dark, and then … there’s really no other way to describe it: the room transforms.

You find yourself in a club. The music is upbeat, loud, but not too loud. Down a short flight of steps flanking the bar and seating is the open floor with more tables and booths bathed in a warm, dim glow of light, and at the very end of the room is a stage with its bright spotlight showcasing its performers — though, at the moment, the stage is empty.

9.0   When you take a step forward, you’ll feel a presence gently push at your chest or your shoulder — a tall and jovial man resembling a well-dressed bartender from the top up (the rest of him appears to move along wheels) approaches with a tall flute glass in hand. Its contents are sparkly and blue.

“Hello, there. Care for a drink? I’m afraid you won’t be allowed to continue until you do, and I assure you this is entirely safe. All effects you might experience remain only so long as you participate in this simulation.

Will you proceed? Please respond ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”

There’s something a little strange about his voice, a cadence that doesn’t sound quite natural even when the simulation is so realistic otherwise. Once you’ve given your consent, the bartender continues.

“One thing you should know: there is an orb within this club. This drink will aid in your ultimate retrieval of the orb. To better blend in with our patrons, you may experience temporary changes within your body. Good luck.”

10.0   It seems the bartender wasn’t lying. Once you’ve allowed the drink (tasty, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, effervescent, with light notes of your fondest childhood memory) to settle in your stomach you might experience a myriad of effects on your body, ranging from a change in skin colour (pink? green? blue with spots?), an additional limb or two (or three), a tail or wings, or cybernetic parts such as lie-detecting eyes or a tongue that can uncover truths and lies in others. If you happen to find another Orber within the room and both of you have consumed the offered drink, you might find yourself experiencing a full bodyswap.

None of the changes are painful; if anything, they might not even be noticeable until you look into a mirror, look down at your limb-in-question, or your companion points it out.

11.0   The moment you approach the stage, a performer will appear as if out of thin air and begin to sing, her voice strong and smoky and melodic. Her enthralling performance could put you into a trance, but you have an orb to find and a personal task to accomplish, so it’s time to put your best foot forward and do a little investigating.

Talking to some of the patrons might prove fruitful as some of them are convinced that the stage has never sounded or looked so good, like there’s something giving performers that extra oomph that no one can explain. It might be wise to wait until that last performance before you sneak up there — or maybe you want to do a little snooping around now, you know, while everyone’s distracted. Strategize with your fellow Orbers and uncover the location of this hidden orb.

N O T E:   The effects of the drink and the level of changes your character experiences is entirely up to you. Patrons of this fine club won’t bat an eye if you look a little like them.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   If you’ve been given a particular body change that might aid you in this mission, do not use it to your advantage.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber to uncover the hidden location.

C   Get up on stage and put on a performance during the simulation. Your song choice will determine the outcome of success in your investigation.

FOR SOME FUN:

Have a listen for some clues about the second mission.

rhysand. — a court of thorns and roses, ota

[personal profile] business 2021-08-21 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
all that glitters.
1.0
( feyre is especially hard-edged, today.

at least, that's what rhysand thinks as he blindly reaches out in his sleep, pulling the small robot back towards his chest. he pulls a face and grumbles at his wife's apparent fussing from his cuddling arms — something he's not at all used to, but doesn't immediately register as an issue for him. what does feel strange? the lack of warm skin, and all the soft, curvy bits of —

he opens his eye, and it is not the wild look of feyre archeron, high lady of the night courst looking back at him. instead it's this angry little

actually what is that thing.

after a beat too long rhysand releases the ... thing, furrowed brows taking up a severe look on his face as he looks around himself, taking it all in. the unfamiliar walls, the mess. the missing awareness of velaris taking up space around him.

the constant prodding of this annoying little thing, shooing at him.

rhysand picks it up without skipping a beat and turns it to face in some other direction, giving it a rough pat on the butt (?)
)

Shoo.

( when it turns back around to fuss at him even harder, he rudely picks it up again, turning it upside down and inspecting the wheels, the ... make up of it. definitely nothing like this at home. )

Well, I couldn't let you think you're the most annoying creature here. Quit whining, I'm busy.

the new staycation.
4.0
( acceptance of his presence here settles into him heavily, every weight on his shoulders feeling tenfold with his missing mate. the high lord in him wants to be pragmatic about it, smart about it, strategic enough like feyre would be. but the illyrian in him just wants a fight, to spread his wings and taste his blood.

that's how he ends up at the training rooms, happy enough to engage anyone in sparring, either hand to hand or with swords.

more importantly than that, to any onlookers, rhys has long since stripped his shirt and now he's just a Hot Tan Muscled Up Sweaty dude covered in Tattoos and wow, are those two big bat wings on his back? and why does it seem like all the shadows in the room are crowding in on him, responding to him, moving with his body?

someone get this himbo a water bottle or maybe a hug.
)

bright young things.
9.0
( effecting fae wines are not unheard of to rhysand, who accepts the suspicious drink with an equally suspicious look, sniffing it contemplatively. given that there's no other way forward he supposes he doesn't have much of a choice, but it's still with a bitter look that he brings the flute up to his mouth, taking a tentative sip.

it's not bad, but then — he didn't expect it to be. not all poisons will kill you.

lifting his brow at the nearest person, he shrugs to them with the energy of saying c'est la vie, tipping his drink in their direction.
)

Bottoms up.

wildcard.
( byop! for reference, rhysand has a Great Many relevant powers including shadow manipulation, but most importantly he has mind reader capabilities. if i app ill have a more official opt in/out post but for these purposes i'll run under the assumption rhysand can read your character's mind, but likely won't do anything about it. it's really only relevant if you'd like to bodyswap in the last prompt, which i am very much down for. if you have questions pls pm or message me over at [plurk.com profile] trashmouth )

[Maybe this person comes from a planet where these materials don’t exist. Yelena supposes not all worlds will have the same materials and resources.]

Good carbon fiber can be better than steel. Strong, but light weight, and it won’t set off metal detectors. G-10 is a kind of fiberglass. On Earth it is usually used in the grips of knives and guns, but it can be sharpened to a blade, too.

A precious gift, I'm sure.

[Ra stands straight at a whooping 7 feet.]

Humor me, little one, if you don't intend to spar, why'd you come to the training room? Would the Sunshine Room not be a better fit for you?

It's not a mullet. And I was a child up until fairly recently. Around your age, actually.

If you get the option to magically skip puberty, I highly recommend it. Being a baby sucks. No offense.

Uh, sorry? [He holds up his hands in the universal gesture for surrender— very aware of the knives in his sleeves, but pretty sure he won't need them. Pretty sure.]

I was just watching you, and your... [He makes a vague gesture to indicate the weird armor-creature that melded into Polnareff. (It's a very vague gesture.)] What was that? How do you do it?

( Ah, Hell. She's got him putting his guard up, a slight tightness at the corner of his eyes. Tony swaps tools and keeps his tone politely neutral. )

Yeah, me too. A week ago? Longer?

( He's not unhappy he was mostly unconscious for it, for the unpleasant things to be done for burn treatment, churched-up with fancy tech or not. )

[personal profile] vajratna 2021-08-21 01:44 am (UTC)(link)

True. They're very fast, but... they're not much use against opponents that aren't bothered by blood loss or organ damage.

[Creatures like the Dead, who could only be incapacitated through far more brutal means.]

So I favor the longsword as well. And there's only been one mission so far, but- given what I've seen, I'd favor a soldier's weapon over a duelist's one.

[Particularly since the Orb's capable of twisting living things into monsters.]

[He exhales a noise that might almost be a laugh; it's a little weak and hoarse to be a proper one. The irony of "orbs" being the path to wishes being granted is not lost on him, though it's a bit much to explain. And to take in, besides.]

Is it credible? That sounds like it belongs in a dream and should stay there... wishing can't change the past.

[Though maybe doubting time travel or other such fantasies isn't something he ought to be doing, considering she just used magic to heal him. What can be considered "normal" doesn't apply the same as it used to.]

"Well- could be. Could also be someone has a hobby." The Doctor turns to look at some of the weaponry. Some he knows; some he doesn't. However, he does know that enough in the room are, in fact weapons. Even the things that may look like a hair dryer. The Doctor's gaze goes back on the other, with a simple.

"Mmm." A short pause, "You were being rather loud with your telepathic signal. Broadcasting to anyone who was in proximity I imagine. Quite alright." Another short pause, "Any reason why you were communicating via telepathically. You didn't seem in any immediate danger."

[Steve is in, relatively, better shape despite coming from the same battle. His uniform is dirty and torn in places, stained with blood in others, and he probably has a few ribs on the mend thanks to his healing factor, but his exhaustion and the stilted way he moves remain evident.

He's drags himself up off the ground, stepping around the little robot, and then stops. How exactly is he supposed to proceed? But he only hesitates for a moment before continuing forward towards...something.

Other people lie slumped in the corridor and his immediate impulse is to check on them, but the glint of something shiny catches his eye and he feels his chest constrict and his breath leave him in a gasp. The sight of the glove is a painful reminder of his purpose here. But the person it's clinging to is a much better sight.

...If he's still breathing, that is.]

Tony! [Steve closes the distance between them, kneeling down on his glove-less side. He really doesn't want to touch that thing, inert or not. He puts out a hand to help prop the other man up, trying not to hurt him.] Can you hear me?

[personal profile] peerlesscucumber 2021-08-21 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
The only problem he could see was this had been a matter of both participating; he tips his head toward Blue, regarding the bartender in the meantime. Two cups, and someone has to drink them? I wonder if...

"Yes," he says, both accepting Blue (a stranger, who can read minds, this is probably closer to nightmare fuel than he wants to think about, but also so far no one's tried killing him or seducing him so it's a pretty great day, night, whatever it was) and the drinks, his fan tucked into his waistband.

Both drinks, held up and downed with all the understated flair of a man who mostly drank tea, and drank it slowly, so yes, he almost coughs downing the two glasses one after another. He barely manages to not cough, inwardly laments there was nothing cool about that other than the fact he doesn't furrow his brow, and licks his lips absently, chasing the strange, not unpleasant flavour.

Couldn't be so bad, he felt nothing different immediately after. Until he has a sort of numb compulsion to sit down, followed by the realisation of why: where he's had two wonderfully normal legs a moment prior, now he has a horribly stereotypical tail.

A mer-tail.

A koi mer-tail, which means he's a carp, and he's also sitting on the ground with what should be his knees tucked up before him, what should be his feet a spread of fins on the floor. They're the only visible part, since with the make of his robes, his feet are all that are showing.

Are you kidding me! What's the point of something that can give you mer-parts?! What if I'd been half octopus! If this is a dance club, shouldn't these body alterations be ones for dancing, not to keep you from it?! Writers! Whoever is in charge of this, he has a complaint! At least three!

"... It would appear," he says, blandly, "That while I may be seeing this through, the perspective is a bit... lower. Than expected."

I am not freaking crawling around here!

[ Perimeter checks are habitual, and Sam is one of those people who is lucky enough to manage being in two places at once. Or rather, he sends Redwing to do the legwork while Sam himself is otherwise occupied.

It's how he gets the alert that Tony Stark is dying on Ximilia Station. Out of the blue, and Sam feels almost offended at how dry the alert is, as if this isn't the single most fucked up and astonishing news of the day. The thought isn't even half finished before Sam ditches his lunch company to go running through the station. Good job, Viveca - thanks for pulling a dying man onto the station. 'cause that's gonna be awesome for everyone involved; Stark arriving and dying immediately. Fuck.

Not on Sam's watch.

He's unconscious by the time Sam follows Redwing's emergency alert to the source. Probably for the better, because Sam knows those injuries. They show up in his nightmares sometimes, when his mind turns to battles, to losses, to both. Six months... Damnit.

Sam's not the only person who makes sure Tony Stark lives to see another day, though he provides the first steps, not so far beyond his days as a field medic that he can't be of use here. He's the one who sends a message to Bucky and Natasha, too, making sure they're in the loop. And he's the one who keeps an eye.

When Tony makes his exit from the infirmary, he'llfind a small, kite sized drone lazily trailing him. Sleeker and sharper than the previous model, but there's something familiar perhaps in the soft electronic beep that sounds almost like a chirp. Redwing's coat is no longer mostly red, but a cool silver with red and blue accents. The paint job and the distinct sheen of a vibranium chassis are, perhaps, dizzyingly reminiscent of a certain shield Tony knows well. Whether Tony's able to figure out what exactly this different looking drone is, though... that remains to be seen.

The question for coffee remains unanswered - at least for a while, because Redwing can't speak. Just quietly sticks with Tony. The upside is that by the time Tony makes it to the kitchen, there's actually a cup waiting for him. Sam's leaning against the counter, sipping from his own. Redwing's a tattletale - and Sam suspected that Tony wouldn't keep to any sensible kinda bedrest from the getgo. ]

So... Don't take this the wrong way. But I don't suppose caffeine's enough to bribe you into bed again?

[ His tone's friendly, but the casual air is mostly feigned. This is awkward on many levels. Two years on the run, and six months post Tony's death. For Stark it's been seven years, all in all, since they last met. Standing on different sides of the bars in the Raft. ]

[Athrun knows better than to sneak up on her; he only just got the blood cleaned up, and would like to keep the rest of it inside his body, thanks. He's also still mostly running on fumes, and when he spots her from the doorway as he enters the lab, he recognizes so much about her even from behind: her poise, the cut of her hair, the way she tilts her head as she works through what to do or where to go next. It aches how familiar it all is, and it would be so even without the uniform. Here he was thinking he'd never see her again, and suddenly she appears right before his eyes.

Yeah, he's just gonna stand in the doorway for a hot minute, stunned and staring.]

Nothing wrong with that. Know a half-human myself. Good man, too.

[The Doctor scratches the bottom of his chin]

Lots of other half-humans in the universe anyways. Given how humans ventured out into the stars and -danced
