fauna

This carnivorous, deep-water dwelling creature commonly makes its home buried in the sand in remote areas. Growing as long as 11 m (36 ft), it captures its prey (small krill and soft-shelled crustaceans) through the use of its bioluminescent fins that act as a lure. Otherwise extremely antisocial, they are an uncommon sight and prefer to hunt during the night when the waters are at their darkest. A meeting with one will not go so well as they lash out in fear.

Historically a feral species, this creature can now be commonly found in populated areas and is often domesticated for family homes. Utilized in farming and construction purposes, some can grow to the size of small horses and have strong, robust physical forms for heavy labour. Easily motivated by food, they can become quite docile and even-tempered.

With an extremely hard shell and a sharp set of pincers and equally sharp teeth, this is not a creature you want to meet if given the choice. They are known for their bad tempers and destructive tendencies and should be lured away from city spaces. They can mostly be found in remote waters, usually minding their own business. If captured and killed, however, they have soft, aromatic meat and are a delicacy in stews.

These snails can range from your average garden variety to over eight feet in size. The smaller ones make for a fine dining experience, often as the protein in carbonara. However, the larger ones don't take kindly to the harvesting and will often spin out of control shooting spines and slime on anything nearby rendering their predators motionless.

Contrary to their name and terrifying appearance, these creatures aren't the type that go bump in the night. They're slow moving and tend to stay as far from civilization as they can after years of evolution have embedded the knowledge in them that others fear them. In spite of their long, sharp teeth, these sharks are herbivores and use them instead to tear through particularly stubborn foliage. They are hesitant to approach and will swim away if anyone gets too close, however the adolescent sharks are more willing to lend a helping fin in discovering difficult to find herbs.

Growing upwards to 5 cm (2 in), these small pixie-like creatures often flock together in large colonies and are not an uncommon sight. It is believed that seeing one in the wild is a bad omen, but seeing more than ten in one place is a blessing for good things to come. They prefer to live amongst coral reefs and feed off of plant-life but can be domesticated as pets.

These creatures provide the queendom with the base for all inks and paints. It isn't uncommon to see small packs of them (called squiggles) lingering outside — or inside! — shops and homes. They aren't particularly dangerous, but if they aren't in the mood to provide their ink, they will emit a small shock and continue to do so until released.

These rare creatures are often a sign of high status in the queendom. They are docile creatures until they aren't, and all the elders remember a time when some were held in captivity and tortured. Legend says that the Fizzy Xotiks combined and grew and grew and grew until they became almost as big as a mountain, and then went on a rampage to destroy those who hurt them. But, that was many, many years ago and surely nothing like that would happen now! The Fizzy Xotiks come in a range of colors: blue — common, aqua — rare, purple — special rare, pink — the rarest of all.

These bioluminescent plants have only recently been discovered and growing far from civilization and farther away from the queendom and higher as if from the surface. Named after the person to first discover them, not much is known of these plants just yet as it is still being studied by the queendom's botanists.

This network of polyps is one to avoid. Carnivorous in nature, they emit a scent that lures its prey towards its bright bulbs, and absorbs its form into itself for digestion. Bursting these bulbs emits a poisonous fluid that instantly kills at first contact. Luckily for most humanoid sea dwellers, this scent is unpleasant, almost too sweet, like something rotting.

These delightful sparkling plants can be found virtually anywhere: growing in small patches around homes and shops, lining pathways, or generally just everywhere. They're harmless if ingested, but why would you? The Main Event of these Flaming Pixie Cups is wearing them. Small buds can be woven into necklaces or bracelets, larger ones can be fashioned into earrings, pendants, brooches — any kind of jewelry your heart desires. They sparkle brighter than any diamond anyone has ever seen and if worn for more than one hour, they emit a gentle warmth and imbue the user with the feeling of light happiness for half an hour. Unfortunately these blooms only function in the deep sea and will dissolve at higher altitudes.

This large, leafy foliage provides protection and shade from the water’s surface and can grow as large and wide as 5 m (16 ft) at full maturation. While the rest of this plant is inedible, seeds can be harvested from their centres during the harvesting season and used in stews, snack foods, and when ground up into fine powder: medicines. Easy to grow and very hardy against most weathering, they can age as far as thousands of years if their environment remains fruitful.

This is the essence of flavor in the queendom. These plants are often grown at homes in gardens or window boxes and ground up to use as seasoning in nearly every single dish made in the queendom. To outsiders it could be likened to salt, but it tastes much, much better.

This plant can be found growing outside grottos in the darkest parts of the sea. Each journey is perilous, but often well worth it as this can be used as a very powerful medication — only if it's blended with the correct herbs and proper pestle. However, if pricked by the many thorns growing along the stalk or digested as-is, the user will meet fatal results.

There's little creativity in the naming of these creatures as they are exactly as their name implies: dragons that are made of coral. They are born when sea dragonlings fertilize the coral reefs on a full moon. These dragoons never leave their nesting grounds and can't ever reproduce on their own. The elite have tried to rehouse them as some sort of status symbol, but if they are brought too far from their nest, they eventually dry up and dissolve in the water. However, when they die naturally they aid in healing their home reef and becoming part of the coral once more.
