OCTOBER + NOVEMBER TDM.

T D M . 0 4

// PART I. a crimson dream

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

These are the words that ring in your ears, as a slowly growing red glow surrounds you in this dreamspace, filling you with an acute sense of dread — and whatever it is that you’ve just agreed to might have changed everything forever.

It is this sense of dream that startles you awake, and as it fades, and your heart begins to slow into something resembling your normal tempo, you'll notice something you should have picked up on immediately: you are not in your bed.

1.0   White walls, clinical yet clean, sparsely-furnished rooms. You may wake in one of three rooms: a room with only one bed, a room with two beds, or a room with four beds. Those waking up in rooms with more than one bed notice that they are not alone. Perhaps the other occupants of the room are still sleeping, dreaming the same dream as you just did, or a regular one after returning to the station just barely a week ago … or perhaps you wake up to the other person in the room watching you.

What you do is entirely up to you: yelping in surprise when you wake to someone staring at you is always an option. Or maybe you’ll try to sneak away before anyone notices you...

2.0   Those with life-threatening injuries will find themselves waking up in the infirmary, in a regular hospital bed. Most of their injuries have been treated, and any lingering illnesses or conditions will have designated medicine bottles on the table next to the bed.

White curtains surround the bed on both sides, providing an illusion of privacy. But is that a rustling sound you hear? A set of footsteps? Perhaps you’re not the only one in need of some medical attention.

In fact if you’re very badly off, you might want to hold out hope for some company - you can’t stay in the infirmary forever. You'll have to make your way through the hallways of the station to the living quarters, and claim a room and a bed there.

Once upright, you might notice something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

// PART II. hotel spacefornia

So what else is there to do but to explore, right? Best get to know your way around your new home.

3.0   When trying to decide where you go, you might find your way to the armory, where you can make attempts to work the machine and create a weapon for yourself — maybe replace the one that didn’t come with you to the station ... or maybe you decide to prepare something for the future. Any recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: why not put them to the test and head over to the training room, where the entire purpose of this space is to provide you with opportunities to spar and train to your heart’s content!

4.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself from training, your stomach will prompt you for something to eat. For that you should head to the kitchens and the mess hall, which is equipped with all the basic appliances you might need, along with some more unusual ones (including an ... interesting-looking waffle maker and popcorn machine), as well as ingredients for most generic Earth-based dishes. For some reason, there are also some bags of now-cold popcorn left abandoned over the counters.

5.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds you can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion builds up around anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. The illusion has been programmed to reflect the seasons — the leaves in the trees are currently bright with all the colours of autumn: orange and red and yellow; and the air is crisp and clean. If you follow the path, you'll be led to a bridge rising over a sparkling, babbling brook, a few fallen leaves floating on the water and falling around you like very bright raindrops.

Here, it's easy to forget (for a moment, anyway) that you are in space at all. Maybe that gives you comfort, or maybe it just makes you miss the real thing all that much more.

6.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering with objects over wandering through nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes filled with assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to!

7.0   Some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message. If it’s items you’re lacking, you may just be in luck.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi again, everyone. Those who’ve been here for longer know the deal, but to those new here: there’s a new supply drop. Hopefully you’ll find useful things there. If you made any requests for items, before, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform located near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on top of it. There are clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books ... and in one pile, a varied collection of what seems to be Halloween decorations and costumes. So, sort through the piles and grab what you want before someone else does! (But don't forget: sharing is caring.)

// PART III. trick or treat

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room. It’s been equipped with a new simulation to show you the drill where the missions are concerned, so step in and see what it has in store for you!

8.0   The moment the doors slide shut behind you, the space goes dark and then quickly lights up again, but instead of the blank empty walls you initially walked into, you’re surrounded by colour and lights, the sound of music and chatter, and the smells of deep-fried foods and overly sweet beverages. Someone calls, ‘Step right up, step right up!’ while another voice from somewhere starts to cheer as an electrical sound of a buzzer goes off, announcing its winner for prizes.

It seems that you’ve entered the Carnival simulation, so come on in and have a little fun.

There are booths spread out across these simulated grounds, each one offering food, drink or games. As you wander past you’ll notice that there is a touch of macabre to everything — the colours are black and orange and violet and red, the drinks offered have strange names, some you recognize like ‘Witch’s Brew’ and ‘Eye of Newt’, and some you might not, like ‘Viole(n)t Breeze’ and ‘Undead Essence’. It’s as though all of the things strange and wonderful find themselves spread across the entire universe to unite here.

Once you’ve had your fill of food and games, you can make your way past the little market area to a brightly glittering ferris wheel with carts rotating in a cycle, enticing you to try it out. Or if you’d rather be spooked, there is a hokey little ‘haunted mansion’ to your left that won’t take more than a handful of minutes to move through. Creatures and ghosts will pop out at you when you least expect it, their masked faces exaggerated with paint and some fairly realistic prosthetics to get the adrenaline pumping. Take a friend with you, or go it alone — just try to keep your cool through it all.

9.0   Eventually, once you’ve had your fill of the festivities, you may notice a wooden sign pointing you past the haunted mansion. Pressed on it is a round mark, and you remember that this is simulating a mission — you’re not here to just have fun, but to try and retrieve a simulated orb.

As you follow the path, you’ll find the hustle and bustle of the carnival growing quieter. All around you, there is nothing but woods — and hold on, where did all that mist come from? It surrounds you slowly, the ground seeming slightly damp as you keep walking… and arrive at a graveyard.

So the orb… it’s there, hidden in one of the graves? There’s nothing else to do but to start walking and looking at the gravestones — but when you do, you’ll be shocked to find some of the names are terribly, terribly familiar.

They might be names of your loved ones, people who were still in perfect health back home; and yet here those stones bear their names, along with an epitaph that brings tears to your eyes. And if you move closer… you may experience a flash of colour and light, and a memory suddenly plays out in front of you: the death of your loved one, whoever that may be.

Or perhaps the name you see on a gravestone is something else even more familiar to you: your own. But ... how, right? Reluctantly, your heart pounding, you approach with tentative steps, and yes — the name does not change. It's yours right there ... and it's your own death that you witness when the grave’s spell binds you.

N O T E:   The deaths witnessed are intended to be non-canon deaths, so feel free to go wild inventing them -- this also goes for characters who are canonically dead. These are “alternate universe deaths”, not canon.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   Find the grave of a teammate and witness their death.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber win in one of the Carnival games.

C   Scare a teammate in the haunted house.

[ He raises an eyebrow as the droid messes around in the water. Pretty sure that should be lethal to most droids and judging by the sparks he isn't wrong. ]

Uh huh. I don't think that's good for your health. Maybe you should stop messin' around with it.

[ He makes a motion to shoo the droid away from the water's edge and then stands. His first moments with running water will have to wait until another time when he's confident he's alone. ]

I don't need help if that's why you're over here.

( his arms tighten on her, the way they always do when mention of how difficult her upbringing was comes around the bend — like he might be able to retroactively protect her from those cold winter nights and hot summer mornings, from starving, from all her well earned disappointment in the world. coupled by mention of her sisters uselessness, he clenches his jaw tightly, biting back on some of the crueler words he could think to say on the subject of them. it would displease feyre, and for now, he'd like to keep her awed.

he still smiles wolfishly at her groan, arching a knowing brow.
)

Oh, is that the spot?

( he says, as if he isn't aware of all of feyre's spots, and how she sings when he strokes them.

holding feyre close with one arm, his free one slips, pulling aside the door to the shower and letting her look inside. with now perfect grace, he twists one of the knobs as a rush of nice, steaming water comes raining out of the dual showerheads.
)

Feel it, ( he offers, taking more interest in putting his mouth on her neck, refinding her cunt with his wayward fingers and stroking her more intently. there's just something about showers. ) so warm.

[ there will always be a sense of longing when she looks back at what she survived as a human, a sense of injustice and unhappiness but she also knows that all of it brought her to him, to rhysand and his court of dreams. and while there are things she regrets (and it is part of the reason she is here), she would not change things if it meant she didn't get him at the end of it all.

she throws him an annoyed (but mostly feigned) at his smugness at how he can play her body like a finely tuned instrument. her body, at least, hasn't been too complicated to figure out.

she lets out a sound of surprise when the water bursts out of metal spouts sticking out of the walls. and for a moment, she can forget the way he's touching her, the hot press of his lips in favor of reaching out to put her hand beneath the spray, the movement a little skittish in the way she jerks her fingers back at the warmth and feel of it spraying out.

she lets her hand stay beneath the water after a second attempt, drawing in a breath that has only a little to do with fingers moving more intentionally.]

[ she fumbles with the unwelcome thought that she has nothing to offer. ravka had propped her onto a pedestal, begged for her light to shine its hope upon a nation bathed in darkness; the king and kirigan had both longed for a puppet to parade, to wield against the world as one would wield a sword — in a show of questionable power. men of influence, crushing her skeleton beneath their boots until they could rearrange her bones more to their liking, force her into a different shape.

sankta. sun summoner. naive little girl. she's known well what each of those roles could provide them, what she might represent, but rhysand — has not asked her to be anyone. that freedom feels terrifying, as much as it is exhilarating — to be both no one and someone. maybe it's as simple and as difficult as knowing what he wants from her is something immeasurable, something intangible: happiness. nothing more, nothing less.

somehow, it nearly feels as daunting as becoming ravka's sole hope for salvation. or — it would feel as intimidating, if not for the balm feyre's words are. something she hadn't known she had needed to hear, until the other woman had granted her that soothing kindness. her lips twitch into a shy smile that only brightens — a sudden flash of white teeth as she chimes out a laugh, tucking a loose and unruly strand of hair behind one ear.

[ for all that he plays the high lord and leader of armies, rhysand will always value the importance of one making their own choices, especially those he cares about. whatever expectations alina may feel from others she knows, rhysand will make no demands of her, just like he'd made no demands of feyre.

of course, he might try to charm his way into getting what he wants but he will always relent, he will always bow down to whatever choice she makes. feyre knows it from experience.

this is feyre's choice in the end. she cannot abide the idea of hurting rhys and maybe she even feels some shame about possibly hurting this girl she does not know. two hearts whole are better than two broken, whatever little fractures this causes to her own heart are ones she can bear. her heart is full of tiny fractures. some will never quite heal and some will.

feyre glosses over alina's first words, if only because she doesn't want to think about what attentions rhys wanted from alina. however, she keeps her expression warm, thinking that alina's laughter is as charming as her smile. as for the last part, it was honestly a miracle that rhys let her be alone for even an hour. however, she'd asked to be left alone in the most peaceful place on the ship so that she could mourn her father. but moreover, she needed some time to think alone and perhaps ask other people on the ship questions.]

He showed me some of it but I prefer to get the lay of the land myself. [ it stems from being a hunter, from figuring out different landscapes on her own.] But he's reluctant to let me out of his sight. Maybe I should have distracted him with a mirror.

"You deserved Cleveland and you know it."

Cleveland was a good time. Sam's still proud of that one. The look on Steve's face... ah, beautiful. The thought gets immediately derailed though at the mention of Natasha, and for a moment Sam freezes, has to stares into the far distance and swallow, hard. He's lost her twice, now. Mourned her twice, now. To have her back...

He can't think of that right now, it's like picking at a wound that's not had time to heal. Later, then. Sam pushes the thought aside, gives Steve a slight nod that tries to convey there's a more complicated story there, with Natasha, but Sam can't get into that right now.

Instead he leads Steve the short distance to where the rooms are, points out some things along the way so Steve knows where to find other features of the station. The room they eventually get to, Sam explains, is one he shares with Bucky. There are two beds in the room - they're pushed together to form one sleeping area. Neatly made, but signs of life scattered throughout the room. A few books. Clothes hung over the backs of chairs. A few more pillows and blankets than are strictly necessary. Bucky's obviously not here right now - Sam comments that he's likely in the sunlight room. Sam sets the shield aside in a corner with his Captain America suit, and he throws Steve a glance that for a moment is uncomfortable, perhaps worried, but quickly smoothes over.

"Make yourself comfortable. I won't be long." And he's not. The shower is a quick, efficient affair, really not the time and place to soak for long. A couple minutes later, Sam exists the shower again, having ditched the sweaty training clothes in favor of something more comfortable to hang around in. "honestly, surprisingly good water pressure for space."

Peter had lived in different spaceships most of his life, and he was well aware of the human's body need for vitamin D to stay healthy. He tried to visit the sunlight room at least once a day, not just because he didn't want to get sick, the place was calming and a lot of other orbers liked to hang out around here.

He spent some time sunbathing and listening to his Zune, leaning against a tree with his eyes closed, head turned up towards the simulated sun. It got hot after a while, and Peter stretched like a cat before he headed towards the nearest source of water to dip his toes in the river and cold off. He hummed a song under his breath as he walked and it was not difficult to hear him approaching. Once he got there, Peter was greeted by an unfamiliar face. A man that seemed fascinated by...water? Okay, that was kind of cute.

"There are no fishes in it, if you were wondering. But you're free to take a dip, if you want."

Uh...the rampaging undead are new. The rest...eh, I can see it happening. [ He's gone through weirder experiences, including but not limited to: having a biological father that was also a sentient planet. ] No, I didn't die that way, so who knows what even was that gravestone showing you. Do you think your gravestone might be around here too?

[ He doesn't know how they dispose of droids in L3's world but he thinks she deserves a decent resting place regardless. Peter is truly a candy addict, and it's Halloween, so is the best time of the year to be a candy addict. Peter keeps up with her pace, sauntering around and noticing how L3 walks in longer determined strides because of her long legs. ]

I've arrived here a couple of months ago, I've only experienced one mission. It lasted weeks, we were teleported to a planet and had to go undercover as part of different mafia families. It ain't a nickname, it's my hero name! I've got a provisional license and everything. ...It is cool, huh? [Star...Lord??? That gets his attention and he glances up at him in mild interest.] Do you control the stars? Or have some kinda quirk that acts similar to 'em?

[He might be worth sparring against to help with his recovery. And he's smarter than Bakugou first thought. He looks just as unimpressed as ever, but he's actually caught off guard and takes a second to respond as he processes what Peter might be implying.]

Drift had kept coming back to the graveyard because it had, ironically, offered an insight into this place more than any other part of the simulation or the station. This place was showing its hand with these grave markings. Tombstones inscribed with names of people who, to his knowledge, had never stepped foot here. The manner of these supposed deaths was also fascinating. From what he could parse from those willing to speak with him, almost every 'death' could be attributed to something relative to that person's world. It had his brain cog spinning to wonder how much information this place had on himself and the others.

It was then he realized he had been hanging back longer than was polite around this particular gravesite. The sole mourner snapping out of whatever introspection and being understandably terse earned an apologetic bow of the head from Drift.

"No, I apologize," Drift said. "I confess I might have let my curiosity get away from me. The graveyard appears to know a shocking number of personal details about its visitors."

"Wasn't really thinking about that." Cobb drew his hand back and slowly stood up. He hadn't met too many people in this place. It was an almost comically large ship. He had no idea they made them this big with gardens inside.

He took a second to study the younger man. He didn't look too familiar and his clothing were a little different. Probably someone from a core world if he had to guess.

"And I can't swim so jumpin' in ain't gonna happen." He scratched at his beard with a little grin. "Just enjoyin' the scenery. Don't get quiet like this where I'm from."

[ Cobb sighs and runs his tongue along his teeth for a moment. ]

That's gonna be tricky with one hand. I'm a decent mechanic though I never worked on a droid. You want some help?

[ He nods his chin towards the broken hand. It can't be that hard to put parts back on a droid or folks wouldn't use them, right? ]

That is if there's some sort fo workshop around here.

"Yeah, it's strange like that." Cobb rolled his shoulders, trying to work out some of the tension. It wasn't this man's fault all this bantha shit was around. "But then again, we got grabbed without noticin' so is this really that strange?"

He's not expert in the Force or other weird powers of the universe. What he knew was that something or someone had grabbed him and now wanted to play mind games.

Cobb tipped his head towards his own grave. "Hell of an introduction, right? Have you been on this ship long?"

"I've had the pleasure of being kidnapped and detained by far less friendly hosts before," Drift looked sidelong at his own gravesite with an almost amused expression. Apparently, the cause of his demise was suicide, and Drift was insulted at its ignobility. "Though I haven't decided whether or not this little display is a threat or not."

"So that would make you Vanth?" Drift asked, turning his attention back at the stranger's headstone. "No, I'm just another new guy."
heypartner: (Eyebrows)

[personal profile] heypartner 2021-10-29 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that'd be me." Cobb considered the man's gravestone with a little frown for a second. "Drift's an interestin' name."

Suicide not the most interesting death but if it was true like his own gravestone then most likely there was a lot more trouble to this man than met the eye.

"Any reason to think it's a threat? Might be more a show of power." Which wasn't always a threat. Cobb's experience told him that sometimes people just had to show how much power they had. "Remind us we're at this whim."
aurable: (pic#15232246)

[personal profile] aurable 2021-10-29 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"No more interesting than Cobb," Drift returned with a placid smile. Being more than meets the eye is sort of his whole thing, but he figured the man had enough on his plate to be dealing with giant robots.

"Shows of power are invariably a threat because that's the nature of the beast when it comes to authority," There was a sudden tension in Drift's face at this. "Nobody with our best interests in mind needs to remind us of our own mortality."
