AUGUST TDM.

T D M . 0 3

// PART I. all that glitters

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

The words, when they die out, leave you in emptiness — despairing, all-consuming, the kind that invites only the worst thoughts. What have you done? What have you agreed to do?

But then, from the emptiness, a golden light shines, and as you reach for it —

you wake up.

1.0   Perhaps it was less the golden light in your dream and more the insistent feeling of something metallic poking your side repeatedly, making beeping noises… wait, beeping noises?

When you look down, you’ll see a small robot staring at you and looking less than happy (maybe it has something to do with your disheveled state, maybe it's still mad about having to clean up after a certain pizza-induced mess). When you get up, it unleashes a series of beeps — and then furiously starts to scrub the floor.

Yes, the floor — instead of waking up in a bed, you find yourself lying on a hallway, white walls and white floor surrounding you. You don’t have long to stare at the minimalistic look of everything around you before the little bot starts poking you again, the word MOVE blinking across its visor.

So better get out of its way! Perhaps you’re on the hallway on your own and leave on your own… or perhaps there’s someone else, sleeping near you. Maybe do them the courtesy of waking them up before this little angry bot does! Or perhaps you’re the poor soul still sleeping and needing a rescue before the beeps make it to you.

2.0   If you need a visit to the infirmary, the situation may be more dire — perhaps there’s blood on the wall that you wake up against, your clothes may be dirty or ragged… whatever it is that has happened to you before waking here and has left you injured, it sure doesn’t create a reassuring sight. Best get to the infirmary as soon as possible.... with some assistance, perhaps.

Once upright, you may notice there’s something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

TOP

// PART II. the new staycation

So what else is there to do but to explore? Best get to know what is now your new home.

3.0   The most pressing question that you might ask yourself is: but where will I stay? The question is answered once you walk through the winding white corridors to the common area. Behind it, there are three types of rooms: those with one bed, two beds and four beds. The rooms are clinical yet clean, and sparsely-furnished — and most importantly, most are occupied. So be prepared to get some roomies!

4.0   You may find your way to the armory, where you can try to work the machine there to make yourself a weapon — perhaps to replace one that didn’t come with you to the station… or maybe you want to be prepared for the future. The recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: to put it to good use, head to the training room, where the entire purpose is to provide you with a space to spar and train to your heart’s content!

5.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself training, it’s time to grab a bite. For that, you should head to the kitchen, which… seems to be filled with a lot of leftovers: takeout boxes with an assorted collection of pizza slices, kung pao chicken, lamb curry... not to mention the entire tray of chocolate brownies. Feel free to eat your fill — or if takeout isn’t your cup of tea, open one of the large fridges to pick fresh ingredients and make your own lunch.

6.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds the characters can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion surrounds anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. A new addition is a flower garden where there once was a meadow — now, roses, camellias, lilies and dozens of other flowers sway in the wind, all varieties in their own flower beds, with a winding path of stones leading through them. The path leads to where a bridge rises over a sparkling, babbling brook.

Here, it is easy to forget you are in space at all. Perhaps that gives you comfort, or just makes you miss the real nature all the more.

7.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering over nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes containing assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging, and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to make!

8.0   If it’s items you’re lacking, though, some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi everyone, just letting you know there’s a new supply drop. It should be a little more… well, organised than before. If you made requests for items earlier, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on it. There’s clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books… even a couple of CDs, and a few cute stuffed animals. So sort through what there is and grab what you want, before someone else does!

// PART III. bright young things

(CW: POTENTIAL BODY MODIFICATION)

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room.

Step past the threshold and the doors will slide shut with a quiet woosh. Nothing suspicious; nothing to worry about. But before you can really get a sense of your environment (a grey, large-ish empty room, no furniture, no discernable objects to provide markers), the room goes dark, and then … there’s really no other way to describe it: the room transforms.

You find yourself in a club. The music is upbeat, loud, but not too loud. Down a short flight of steps flanking the bar and seating is the open floor with more tables and booths bathed in a warm, dim glow of light, and at the very end of the room is a stage with its bright spotlight showcasing its performers — though, at the moment, the stage is empty.

9.0   When you take a step forward, you’ll feel a presence gently push at your chest or your shoulder — a tall and jovial man resembling a well-dressed bartender from the top up (the rest of him appears to move along wheels) approaches with a tall flute glass in hand. Its contents are sparkly and blue.

“Hello, there. Care for a drink? I’m afraid you won’t be allowed to continue until you do, and I assure you this is entirely safe. All effects you might experience remain only so long as you participate in this simulation.

Will you proceed? Please respond ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”

There’s something a little strange about his voice, a cadence that doesn’t sound quite natural even when the simulation is so realistic otherwise. Once you’ve given your consent, the bartender continues.

“One thing you should know: there is an orb within this club. This drink will aid in your ultimate retrieval of the orb. To better blend in with our patrons, you may experience temporary changes within your body. Good luck.”

10.0   It seems the bartender wasn’t lying. Once you’ve allowed the drink (tasty, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, effervescent, with light notes of your fondest childhood memory) to settle in your stomach you might experience a myriad of effects on your body, ranging from a change in skin colour (pink? green? blue with spots?), an additional limb or two (or three), a tail or wings, or cybernetic parts such as lie-detecting eyes or a tongue that can uncover truths and lies in others. If you happen to find another Orber within the room and both of you have consumed the offered drink, you might find yourself experiencing a full bodyswap.

None of the changes are painful; if anything, they might not even be noticeable until you look into a mirror, look down at your limb-in-question, or your companion points it out.

11.0   The moment you approach the stage, a performer will appear as if out of thin air and begin to sing, her voice strong and smoky and melodic. Her enthralling performance could put you into a trance, but you have an orb to find and a personal task to accomplish, so it’s time to put your best foot forward and do a little investigating.

Talking to some of the patrons might prove fruitful as some of them are convinced that the stage has never sounded or looked so good, like there’s something giving performers that extra oomph that no one can explain. It might be wise to wait until that last performance before you sneak up there — or maybe you want to do a little snooping around now, you know, while everyone’s distracted. Strategize with your fellow Orbers and uncover the location of this hidden orb.

N O T E:   The effects of the drink and the level of changes your character experiences is entirely up to you. Patrons of this fine club won’t bat an eye if you look a little like them.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   If you’ve been given a particular body change that might aid you in this mission, do not use it to your advantage.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber to uncover the hidden location.

C   Get up on stage and put on a performance during the simulation. Your song choice will determine the outcome of success in your investigation.

"Unnecessary." With the attached thought of, apologising for needing help isn't needed in this. How useful was I? I sat here with a freaking tail the whole time, you did the work!

Not that he minds delegating, particularly things he finds bothersome, but that hadn't been the point here. He reaches his hands out, more to take Blue by the elbows such as it is to help the man to his feet. There's a wordless question of what kind of not-alright Blue is or isn't, but he leaves it as an impression, not fashioning it into anything direct. It's the only way he can think (and he does think this, aware of and annoyed at his inability to not form thinking thoughts sometimes) of offering the question of concern without making it likewise request an answer, or make itself something to necessitate denial.

Part of him considers flinching away. Luo Binghe isn't fully realised or stable in his power, and part of him wants to wonder why, if it's because he's not bothered getting his harem started, if he's not learned to balance the energies of his dual heritage, but like hell he's asking about that. He also wonders, faintly and with his expression turning slightly tighter lipped, if Luo Binghe's blood remains in his system. He doesn't know, can't trace it himself, but is it?

The problem, right before him, isn't the hand on his arm. Isn't the fact their timing's all fucked up, and his grand, genuinely meant apology that undid nothing has further undone even less here and now. He remembers, more or less, his nonsense trying to justify why Luo Binghe should surrender himself to the Abyss, and parts of him weren't entirely wrong—or right, or anything inbetween.

"This Shizun was wrong."

Nothing else said, just those words, far from enough. Not even the apology he owes, but he doesn't know how to frame it, staring at Luo Binghe now, less crowded by the fear of when this had last happened, or the pain in starting to realise something he's not presently allowing himself to examine. Something about pain, and trauma, and grief, and anger, and self-destructive tendencies that don't make sense for a young man who's meant to make the world kneel.

Surely, surely he's wrong. Surely, standing there and not shaking his disciple's hand from his arm, wearing the dark splatters of dried blood down his robe that is, perhaps, only fully apparent when he's still now and not in motion or attempting to avoid Luo Binghe's direct assessment, he's wrong. This is the protagonist. The one for whom the world bent. Not this one, perhaps, but he was impossibly strong. His anger was impossibly well deserved. It was impossible that Luo Binghe would not have what he wished of the world.

(Not to see the child hurt beneath it all, but to see what man he might become, and fail to understand the young man standing before him even now. I'll crush fate beneath my feet.)

Still, let one fool stand before his regret clothed in familiar form, see the death he'd chosen, and wear the lingering efforts of his destruction painted down the front of his robes. Blood spit from a mouth that had slackened after apology, shattering meridians that are impossibly whole now. He doesn't know how to be so magnanimous in less than a day, and so the inadequacy of what words he found stays as it is.

This Shizun was wrong. Like it changes anything.

( he's at least not complaining about the lack of any pretty teasets. he could be more pedantic, and so far we're spared! so far. )

Milk?

( a quirk of his brow, just a touch; not much of an expression shift, but given by and large he's shown little enough so far, it's something. he sets to collecting the tea leaves and parseling them into the sieve, blanking on why one would...

... okay, now he feels old. while his first thought isn't, tea drunk elsewhere in the world, his brain does leap to milk tea, and a sudden, intense, almost decade old craving strikes him hard and fast out of nowhere. could he even handle lactose anymore? maybe they'd have milk alternatives...

as it is, he's over here, pouring water into mugs and lamenting internally the lack of any teapot for steeping first! okay! now it's one mug at a time... alas. they'll have to wait minutes.

A person always has a unique view of the world, a thrilling story to tell when given time. And I have a feeling we'll be here for a while so you have plenty of chances for something to come bubbling up, I'm sure.

-I suppose the error is mine then. For all I know, your arrangements in your residence back home is more similar to that of a closet than an actual bed.

But why do you think we'll eat you? Are supplies in the station that dire? [ she feels like that would have been brought up in that welcome message of hers! ]

( So this Walker was in the works for a while, is the exact same conclusion Tony comes to. He's the last person who ought to throw stones at over-preparedness, as its undisputed king, but Ross was never as Big Picture as the man claimed. He prepared for Steve's replacement because it suited him to have, at last, a Star-Spangled Man who wouldn't defy him.

Motherfucker.

It's unfair to this Walker too, he knows. MoHs aren't passed out like Halloween candy; this guy had to be exceptional just to get one, much less three. Probably idolized Captain America, so much he couldn't imagine saying no, and clearly felt it was was his duty to chase after Sam and Bucky.

Tony doesn't ask how Sam felt, because he reads it in his face, in his eyes. Bucky and Steve went back farther than any of them, but Tony would have been blind to miss Sam and Steve's friendship. The regard both men had for one another, the trust. With Steve gone, Sam would be alone.

Did he tell you he was leaving? Tony wonders.

The five year gap wasn't all a world of vast, gleaming opportunity either– he remembers the emptiness of it, most of all, the silence that descended some places and never truly left. The shortages in manpower, in necessities as jobs were left empty, harvests were untended, manufacturing ground to a halt, and all supply chains stuttered and stilled. So many more died that first week alone, as parents, caretakers, doctors and emergency workers were simply gone. Everyone the world over knew someone who vanished, and eventually, that became what united them, forging new connections, driving migrations for work, for better lives than those they had left behind. The world was smaller, quieter, but they survived, they moved on.

Tony had mixed feelings about the mission, and he probably always will. He and Pepper had discussed outcomes before he left for the last time, plans in the event of success- or failure. Stark Relief was meant to assist the displaced, confused, and potential homeless who came back, an organized effort that would hopefully link with other organizations and governments across the globe. They couldn't just snap their fingers and leave people to flounder.

He's still turning that over when Sam wraps, and for a second there Tony thinks he misheard him. Tony straightens, his spine rigid, a cold block of ice settling in his gut. )

Finn has to wonder if they came across their names in similar ways, considering how that was phrased. But it's not his business, so he won't pry.

I could use what help you can provide, I'm sure. His expression takes on a shade of regret, even as the thought leaves him. I don't...understand this place. And you say there's no threat of the machines...

People place too much value in the wrong things if you ask me. [ He answers kindly, aware of Steve's less than a stellar health condition when he was younger, and how many couldn't simply see past that. It's in all history books and even if Peter hadn't read one since he was eight, Steve was a national hero. Everybody knew his story.

But how many actually know what it meant? How much of it really talked about the man himself? Yes, the serum made Steve physically unstoppable, but there are plenty of strong individuals in the galaxy. From what Peter learned from their brief, but significant encounters, there's just one Steve Rogers. Just one, stubborn and brave and fearless...willing to forgive people for their mistakes.

Peter shouldn't have expected anything less than compassion and understanding from him, he doesn't know why he thought any different. It's just that it's undeserved. True, many small mistakes lead to Thanos having the chance to obtain the Infinity Stones, but they also had an impossible opportunity to take the Gauntlet from him, and it failed because of Peter. He doesn't even remember much of what happened right after learning about Gamora's death and losing to Thanos, it's all a bit of a blur.

Gods, he is so, so very tired. ]

Thanks. [ He says instead of But you should, because Steve has enough troubles already, he doesn't need Peter's. ] Has anybody taken a look at your injuries? I know you heal faster, but...it couldn't help to check.

At least he's light, because Blue isn't doing well to get on his feet alone. He clutches Shen Qingqiu's arms even after he's been set on flat feet, just making sure he can stay balanced before starting to let go. No thoughts pass through at that time, as Blue makes a determined effort to keep from imposing on the other's mind. It's tough when there's physical contact opening up avenues to dive into a heart, so more's the need to be mindful.

He lets go, drawing his arms to himself, his head turning in the direction of where he'd entered.

We should leave...before anything can reset. Or change.

Yeah, would you believe it's the government who gave it out?

[ that's just the way life goes for him, and while there's plenty of shit that goes on in the black market, a lot of the trade offs for sleeves all happening legally. sometimes it's just a matter of who's got the money to get the better deal.

he takes a moment to look at the machine, not even sure he wants to bother trying. after all, he fought once to try wiping out stack technology in the first place. maybe it's good that it doesn't exist wherever he's ended up. ]

Finn can't claim to understand what Blue's thinking, but he does know trauma and the inability to get over first (or fiftieth) impressions.

"Back home, I was even friends with some of them. They're all different, a lot like people. Some are more bad than good and vice versa.

"The ones on this station-... I don't know Viveca too well, yet, but she's okay. She makes sure we have food, supplies, information. I understand it may take some... getting used to..."

Should he doubt him? Be afraid of him? Should he take the onus of diving into his heart to rip through whatever may be hidden there, implanted externally to convince him to trust cold, calculating machines?

...His presence is nothing like Keith Anyan's, though. And leaping to such an extreme is embracing the kind of fear that would lead him to ruin.

Even as Finn offers assurance, Blue's brow is knit with the unspoken struggle of these thoughts.

A gentle throb in his head bids him to lift a hand to his temple, closing his eye.

I can't...feel deceit in your words...so I know you speak the truth that you know it. And I want to believe you, but...

How can he do that so easily?
peerlesscucumber: (say | i am an island)

Shen Qingqiu, for his part, attempts to be less open, though mostly all that ends up doing is turning his mind into a muffled ongoing muttering of anything passing through. Light, for Blue, though it's without attached remarkability: he doesn't find much heavy unless his poison's acting up, and then he's struggling to survive. Out to go with Blue's suggestion, and a feeling before then, and he nods, leaving the "orb" where it is now, behind him on the real (but less nice looking) stool.

"We carry on." So of course they do, though he pauses, making sure to match gait to Blue without commenting on it. If Blue's this tired, as someone who empathises with a body in rebellion, or exhaustion as a whole, he's not going to let the other man collapse.

It means short work to the door, then out again; and truly, accompaniment to wherever Blue is going if he wants it, or polite farewells otherwise. He's of no mind to inflict himself unnecessarily on others, and he can take time to go have a less immediately not dealing moment to process the mental-shriek of psychic? Psychic! Before promptly deciding he can do jack shit except learn to be less mentally loud. Somehow.

Yeah. It saddens him, but Finn kind of expected as much.

"It's okay. I understand... What can we do to help you feel safer?" Because there's no where to hide from Viveca on this station. But at the same time, can't really hide from anyone else. "You're not alone here. At least, you don't need to be."

He's not alone and he's not dead - both things Blue isn't sure he knows how to account for, given the dramatic and plainly fatal circumstances that preceded this.

If this is a dream or manipulation...it can fool even his senses. And straining so hard to pierce through them, should they be present, takes a toll. He can't escape these circumstances any more than he can escape the deferred grief waiting to embrace him wholly - it only needs the chance to leap into spaces where suspicion and fear will wane.

He's not alone...but he is, in a sense, isn't he? The other Mu...

Thank you.

It's a quieter thought, but no less sincere, even if Blue isn't looking at him anymore.

I don't...have an answer for you. I don't know the answer for myself.
