AUGUST TDM.

T D M . 0 3

// PART I. all that glitters

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

The words, when they die out, leave you in emptiness — despairing, all-consuming, the kind that invites only the worst thoughts. What have you done? What have you agreed to do?

But then, from the emptiness, a golden light shines, and as you reach for it —

you wake up.

1.0   Perhaps it was less the golden light in your dream and more the insistent feeling of something metallic poking your side repeatedly, making beeping noises… wait, beeping noises?

When you look down, you’ll see a small robot staring at you and looking less than happy (maybe it has something to do with your disheveled state, maybe it's still mad about having to clean up after a certain pizza-induced mess). When you get up, it unleashes a series of beeps — and then furiously starts to scrub the floor.

Yes, the floor — instead of waking up in a bed, you find yourself lying on a hallway, white walls and white floor surrounding you. You don’t have long to stare at the minimalistic look of everything around you before the little bot starts poking you again, the word MOVE blinking across its visor.

So better get out of its way! Perhaps you’re on the hallway on your own and leave on your own… or perhaps there’s someone else, sleeping near you. Maybe do them the courtesy of waking them up before this little angry bot does! Or perhaps you’re the poor soul still sleeping and needing a rescue before the beeps make it to you.

2.0   If you need a visit to the infirmary, the situation may be more dire — perhaps there’s blood on the wall that you wake up against, your clothes may be dirty or ragged… whatever it is that has happened to you before waking here and has left you injured, it sure doesn’t create a reassuring sight. Best get to the infirmary as soon as possible.... with some assistance, perhaps.

Once upright, you may notice there’s something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

TOP

// PART II. the new staycation

So what else is there to do but to explore? Best get to know what is now your new home.

3.0   The most pressing question that you might ask yourself is: but where will I stay? The question is answered once you walk through the winding white corridors to the common area. Behind it, there are three types of rooms: those with one bed, two beds and four beds. The rooms are clinical yet clean, and sparsely-furnished — and most importantly, most are occupied. So be prepared to get some roomies!

4.0   You may find your way to the armory, where you can try to work the machine there to make yourself a weapon — perhaps to replace one that didn’t come with you to the station… or maybe you want to be prepared for the future. The recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: to put it to good use, head to the training room, where the entire purpose is to provide you with a space to spar and train to your heart’s content!

5.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself training, it’s time to grab a bite. For that, you should head to the kitchen, which… seems to be filled with a lot of leftovers: takeout boxes with an assorted collection of pizza slices, kung pao chicken, lamb curry... not to mention the entire tray of chocolate brownies. Feel free to eat your fill — or if takeout isn’t your cup of tea, open one of the large fridges to pick fresh ingredients and make your own lunch.

6.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds the characters can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion surrounds anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. A new addition is a flower garden where there once was a meadow — now, roses, camellias, lilies and dozens of other flowers sway in the wind, all varieties in their own flower beds, with a winding path of stones leading through them. The path leads to where a bridge rises over a sparkling, babbling brook.

Here, it is easy to forget you are in space at all. Perhaps that gives you comfort, or just makes you miss the real nature all the more.

7.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering over nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes containing assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging, and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to make!

8.0   If it’s items you’re lacking, though, some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi everyone, just letting you know there’s a new supply drop. It should be a little more… well, organised than before. If you made requests for items earlier, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on it. There’s clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books… even a couple of CDs, and a few cute stuffed animals. So sort through what there is and grab what you want, before someone else does!

// PART III. bright young things

(CW: POTENTIAL BODY MODIFICATION)

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room.

Step past the threshold and the doors will slide shut with a quiet woosh. Nothing suspicious; nothing to worry about. But before you can really get a sense of your environment (a grey, large-ish empty room, no furniture, no discernable objects to provide markers), the room goes dark, and then … there’s really no other way to describe it: the room transforms.

You find yourself in a club. The music is upbeat, loud, but not too loud. Down a short flight of steps flanking the bar and seating is the open floor with more tables and booths bathed in a warm, dim glow of light, and at the very end of the room is a stage with its bright spotlight showcasing its performers — though, at the moment, the stage is empty.

9.0   When you take a step forward, you’ll feel a presence gently push at your chest or your shoulder — a tall and jovial man resembling a well-dressed bartender from the top up (the rest of him appears to move along wheels) approaches with a tall flute glass in hand. Its contents are sparkly and blue.

“Hello, there. Care for a drink? I’m afraid you won’t be allowed to continue until you do, and I assure you this is entirely safe. All effects you might experience remain only so long as you participate in this simulation.

Will you proceed? Please respond ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”

There’s something a little strange about his voice, a cadence that doesn’t sound quite natural even when the simulation is so realistic otherwise. Once you’ve given your consent, the bartender continues.

“One thing you should know: there is an orb within this club. This drink will aid in your ultimate retrieval of the orb. To better blend in with our patrons, you may experience temporary changes within your body. Good luck.”

10.0   It seems the bartender wasn’t lying. Once you’ve allowed the drink (tasty, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, effervescent, with light notes of your fondest childhood memory) to settle in your stomach you might experience a myriad of effects on your body, ranging from a change in skin colour (pink? green? blue with spots?), an additional limb or two (or three), a tail or wings, or cybernetic parts such as lie-detecting eyes or a tongue that can uncover truths and lies in others. If you happen to find another Orber within the room and both of you have consumed the offered drink, you might find yourself experiencing a full bodyswap.

None of the changes are painful; if anything, they might not even be noticeable until you look into a mirror, look down at your limb-in-question, or your companion points it out.

11.0   The moment you approach the stage, a performer will appear as if out of thin air and begin to sing, her voice strong and smoky and melodic. Her enthralling performance could put you into a trance, but you have an orb to find and a personal task to accomplish, so it’s time to put your best foot forward and do a little investigating.

Talking to some of the patrons might prove fruitful as some of them are convinced that the stage has never sounded or looked so good, like there’s something giving performers that extra oomph that no one can explain. It might be wise to wait until that last performance before you sneak up there — or maybe you want to do a little snooping around now, you know, while everyone’s distracted. Strategize with your fellow Orbers and uncover the location of this hidden orb.

N O T E:   The effects of the drink and the level of changes your character experiences is entirely up to you. Patrons of this fine club won’t bat an eye if you look a little like them.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   If you’ve been given a particular body change that might aid you in this mission, do not use it to your advantage.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber to uncover the hidden location.

C   Get up on stage and put on a performance during the simulation. Your song choice will determine the outcome of success in your investigation.

There's a sense of surprise, and wonder, and also horror, but horror of the kind that speaks to personal embarrassment and a worry that goes deep, a man who lives his outward truth and his inward one to keep himself sane through rather insane circumstances.

Outwardly, his fan stills and he blinks, inclining his head toward Blue. "I see. Unusual, for where this one is from."

Inwardly, as is usual for him, is another story. Are you kidding! No, you're not kidding, are you. Oh for the sake of—you don't go around telling other people what you've heard on people's minds, right? No thought crimes! Thoughts are just thoughts!

He glances away, as if unconcerned, thoughts still racing. Also I definitely do not think this situation makes sense, we're isekai'd into space for regrets that can't possible go back and rewrite the places we're from, no system's screaming at us, and this whole training simulation is a crock!

Getting out a tumbling list of mental complaints he'd have been thinking anyway, only now aimed in a sort of worried bubble in Blue's direction. His fanning starts up again, as if he can calm himself down by keeping over half his face hidden, studiously regarding the simulation barkeep and his Witchcraft and Wizardy level mysterious substance.

He clears his throat. "I don't suppose this master is... cluttering the air between us."

I've never needed a mental shield before! Just a dream one!

[Sabriel holds up her hands, even as she inches closer. She's not armed with any visible weapons, but there's no sign of fear or hostility in her expression- just concern.]

My name is Sabriel. I'm part of the Ximilia's crew- that's the space station you're on.

[Sabriel moves forward, hands still up. Clearly, he's agitated- was he in some sort of battle before arriving here? Many of the crew were soldiers...]

I'll explain what's happened, but first, I need to take you to the infirmary to deal with your injuries. Whatever fight you were in, it's not relevant here.

Goodness. It's been a while since Blue's been in the face of such abject hyperaware self-consciousness...it reminds him a little bit of how Jomy struggled to adjust to his life on the Shangri-La.

Blue lifts a hand in a pacifying gesture.

"I will not invade your thoughts," he assures. "I can hear what you convey no different than if you were speaking aloud, but I do not delve carelessly."

He glances past him, around at the simulated area.

"And I don't think...that's something to focus our energies on right now."

Sabriel hesitates, pausing so the man can get his balance.

"I don't know," Sabriel admits, "We all come from... very different places. And we haven't been able to learn much about what's happening at home- any of our homes. Or even how we might return, save for completing our end of the pact, and reuniting all the orbs."

"I am sorry," Sabriel says, and she means it. Sabriel wasn't taken in the midst of some deadly conflict, but this man apparently was. But all she could do now was deal with the problem in front of her, which meant making sure her new crewmate got medical treatment.

Oh great, this will be fun. Dry sarcasm, as much as it can translate in mental tone, and he sighs outwardly, fanning his face.

"No, of course not. Are you willing to engage with their arbitrary rules, or would you prefer to walk away?"

He knows his inclination is exactly caught in the middle, because is it a bad idea? Drink the untested substance? Sure, but as far as he knows, he's already dead, if he isn't then he's still got a fatal disease, if that was cured like his meridians are—wait, are they?

Shen Qingqiu takes a break from his own mental cataloguing to send qi circulating through his meridians, finding them remarkably whole for a man who'd just shattered them saving the disciple he'd technically blackened on system statement and his own terrible decisions. Regrets, and that's why they're here even if they should be dead, right? (Or he should be dead. Of course his hairbrained plan to leap bodies hadn't gone as intended. Look where he is now!)

With a tiny frown creasing the corners of his mouth, he glances back towards Blue. Curiosity would say, drink it and follow the White Rabbit wherever it'll take them. Better sense says this is a crap of a simulation, and if that's what is required finding orbs, they need a better game plan anyway.

Still, he's curious.

"How bad is the worst that could happen?" Temporary, right? Temporary... transformations. Maybe they'd just go the Magical Girl way, end up in the appearance of whole new outfits.

[Ximilia? It rings a bell as "known but unknown", though he's still too out-of-sorts to parse it; neither ZAFT or Alliance, which is what matters to him in the moment. He doesn't... relax, exactly, but his aggression eases off into a normal degree of caution instead. He does need medical attention, probably. All this blood's supposed to be on the inside, and he has no idea how bad his injuries are. He vaguely recalls protecting Meyrin in the cockpit as everything exploded around them, but not much else. And hang on, "space station"? He was on Earth... just how long has he been unconscious?

Shaking his head, he dismisses his wandering thoughts for the moment, rolling himself over and slumping against the wall. For a moment he just sits there, breathing hard.]

Okay... thanks. Sorry for... yelling. I- [He hesitates before he can introduce himself, then offers instead,] Alex.

[ Yzak is minding his own business as he heads down one of the hallways back towards his room. He does not expect to see a bloodstained wall on his way, so he screeches to a complete halt when he notices that. ]

What the...

[ Everything on the station seemed just fine, so this is alarming to say the very least. Yzak immediately starts moving again, briskly now, to follow the fresh trail along the wall, suddenly worried that something is happening as his mindset shifts to one ready to take action.

And the trail doesn't lead him very far before arriving at the source of the bleeding.

He stops.

He stares.

The uniform, the hair, the way Yzak can feel his blood pressure instantly spike when he realizes. And he's of two simultaneous thoughts in that moment as he physically catches up to Athrun. ]

YOU!

[ He reaches out, he grabs him, both to steady him because, despite his reaction, Yzak can tell that he got into some shit already and needs to be carted off to the infirmary, and also because he can't not greet Athrun by shaking him a little. But it's ok, they're Coordinators, Athrun can handle that Yzak isn't entirely gentle with the action. ]

What the hell happened to you!? [ The first thought.

But then the second, clearly more important one: ]

And what are you doing here, you bastard!?

What...?

Blue's eye winces - an action that makes the affected eye throb. It's not clear to him what's happening, who she is, where he is...

But it's not Meggido, is it? Nazca means nothing to her. And the things that had flowed from her mind were...foreign.

He's at a loss. Bewildered, but with no other options, he can only silently accept her aid, move as she bids him.

[ okay so. space. space is new. well, not that new, she’s met a couple of celestial deities before. suns, moons and shadows. wasn’t the best of experiences, wasn’t the worst. which is usually how it goes. she sneaks along the corridor. if mini was here, she could be more stealthy, but she wasn’t the stealthy pandava. she was the cunning one. which does not translate into stealth stats, unfortunately.

this would never happen to spider-man, aru thinks to herself. all of the sudden, she hears footsteps and in a flash, she’s got a crackling lightning bolt pointed at you.

then she blinks. ]

Uhhh. You’re . . . not what I expected.

( ii. electric ball boogaloo pikachu )

[ ever since aru landed in the station, vajra has been . . . spotty. she’s not sure if it’s picking up her nerves or her general unease. in aru’s time as a demi-god, she’s learned landing up in unexpected places when they ask you cryptic questions is . . . well, normal but rarely a good thing. but no other gods have showed up. it is making her antsy.

and vajra is clearly expressing it.

an electric orb, the size of a ping pong ball is bouncing off the walls and it if brushes against you, you’ll receive a mild electric shock as it passes by while aru chases after it, exasperated. ]

Heel! Stop! Argh, you stupid thing!

[ vajra finally pauses in mid-air, sparking a little. aru stands her ground, crossing her arms. ]

Uh-uh. We’re not doing that. Now, you better come back before I stuff you down a sock.

[ the ball hovers back to her, incredibly contrite before turning into a bracelet which she slides over her right wrist. she grimaces before looking up at whoever is there. ]

. . . Sorry. It’s been acting kind of . . . weird.

( iii. network post - movie night )

So I guess I’m new. And we’re all in a team. But being a team involves bonding. No bonding equals quick failure. Trust me, I’ve run missions. Though those were more like the end of the world, we’re all gonna die, blah blah kind of missions. This actually feels a lot more low-key.

Anyway! Bonding q. Name your favourite movie.

Blue shakes his head, trying to keep his outward movements and words as composed as he can manage. It's as much to ease any concerns or paranoia that may crop up from the man now overly concerned with his own thoughts...as it is to console himself. He's exhausted still; if something happens here, he doesn't know how much stamina he can expend to protect himself and this stranger.

"I don't rightly know," he admits. He can't get a read on this situation. And the ask from the bartender is...strange.

"I don't understand...if this is a kind of training...or trick from the machines that operate this ship."

[It's the music that draws Clara's attention. At first she had popped by to visit Newt, but the sound of the guitar draws her in. She listens from a hiding spot at first, unsure of who's playing. Whoever it is, they're good. Good enough that she leans against a wall to appreciate the music for a while.

But then there's the sound of feedback, and her nose wrinkles up. She's just about to speak up with a teasing remark when she hears his voice. That voice isn't one she knows incredibly well just yet, but she's committed it to memory and her eyes go wide as it plays through her mind like an echo.

By the time he's done patting at the speaker and being cross with it, he'll notice one wide eyed Clara standing on the other side of the speaker. She can't speak at first, and just stares at him with those wide eyes much like she had the moment he regenerated.

Eventually her gaze travels down to the guitar, then back up to his face. Yeah, this is definitely him. He seems less out of sorts now, at least?
]

This is an awful place to play the guitar.

It's all right, Alex. I know arriving here can be confusing. But your injuries are- I'm going to see what I can do about them right here. Don't be alarmed, it's just a healing spell.

He didn't think to make sure these brownies didn't belong to anyone before helping himself. He swallowed his bite and let out a sheepish laugh.

"Both." He snaps his fan closed, tapping it against his breastbone, no hesitation. The certainty echoes through him, one unified whole. Why? Because it's exactly how he believes these things work.

"It's a training exercise asking us to accept the trick within it." Why, or if it was indicative of expectations on these worlds where the orbs had fallen might go... Like he knew. The set-up's too obvious to be anything but an open invitation to the trick itself, the one meant to unsettle and unbalance them from expectation, while solving the 'mystery' within the context of this club.

This way too loud club... he enjoys people watching, even if the people aren't real, but this? Not the same kind of situation he enjoyed.

He clucks his tongue, looking back to the bartender. "The guarantee is it's unlikely to send us back to the infirmary." Back, as if everyone had started out there. "For the rest, testing ingenuity under chaos-touched duress."

"Oh, uh. Right." Letting his confusion go, Finn glances back at the weapons again, tilting his head towards a few of them hanging on the wall.

"The station sends us out on missions to retrieve the orbs. Different planets. There's only been one mission so far, and it went... rocky. To say the least. [Cagalli has completed her freak out for the time being. The robot's been kicked and yelled at, she's gotten the explanation and (annoyingly placed) comm device. Time to find a place to crash!

So a, officially dressed young woman is going around the wing knocking on doors and poking her head in now again to see who's where and what might be available. Her standards aren't high despite her aristocratic upbringing-- Civil people who bathe is really it.]

Hello, anyone in? Got a moment for a new person? Just a few questions.

4. - ARMORY
[At some point, she takes stock of the items on her being: A gun, extra clip, a certain ring, and a change of clothes. All useful or important somehow, but a little extra security never hurts. Firing anything on a space station is a dumb idea, especially when it's one unknown to her. Cagalli decides to head for the blades. Knives, not swords. A dagger or boot knife, something smaller and easier to wield. She's looking over selections when she sees someone nearby. Maybe they're familiar with things.]

Hey, uh, you know if there are any more of these to look at? [She holdsup a random knife to show what she means.] Trying to keep my options open.

7. - LAB
[Shelter, check. Food, check. Protection, check. Time for... nothing else major? By now, Cagalli's just exploring in an attempt to make more sense of things and get her thoughts in order. Going from her bedroom at the mansion to this takes a good amount of brain power to process, and she's finding it hard to scrape enough together. Her thoughts skip over to the meetings she's supposed to have-- something about budgetary proposals for upgrades to the mobile suit storage facilities. Another regarding returning citizens who'd emigrated to the PLANTS during the second war.

Aimlessly wandering while distracted is a great way to end up somewhere she has no real intention of ending up. By the time she realizes, she's already by the door to the laboratory. Figuring she may as well, the blonde enters the area. Stacks and boxes of parts are all over the place, but she does spot some areas that look like people have projects going on. Huh. Might as well check those out.

She goes as close to an experiment or build as she dares, leaning in to look closer and see if she can figure out what it is. She probably can't.

Go on, sneak up on her, it'll totally end well.]

8. - STUFF
[Supply drop, huh? Might be a chance to find something useful. It takes her a little bit to find the place even with the map, but she does soon enough. The message wasn't kidding about the piles, either. A few people are already there, sorting through things. Cagalli stares momentarily before deciding to join them, careful not to step on anything as she does.

A smaller stack looks like a good place to start. Directly on top is a sippy cup with a generic train mascot character on it. Her brow furrows as she looks it over in confusion but sets it aside. A pair of pants that are too big, a strange tube of cream in a language she doesn't recognize, a left boot in navy blue, etc. She pauses when she reaches a hard back book about the history of some war fought somewhere. Well, it'd keep her occupied at least. That goes on the floor right beside her.

The rest of that pile seems pretty useless, so she turns to take a look at the next one, which someone's already rifling through.]

Excuse me, are you done with that section? I'd like a look. [Nice a polite. Nailed it.]
