AUGUST TDM.

T D M . 0 3

// PART I. all that glitters

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

The words, when they die out, leave you in emptiness — despairing, all-consuming, the kind that invites only the worst thoughts. What have you done? What have you agreed to do?

But then, from the emptiness, a golden light shines, and as you reach for it —

you wake up.

1.0   Perhaps it was less the golden light in your dream and more the insistent feeling of something metallic poking your side repeatedly, making beeping noises… wait, beeping noises?

When you look down, you’ll see a small robot staring at you and looking less than happy (maybe it has something to do with your disheveled state, maybe it's still mad about having to clean up after a certain pizza-induced mess). When you get up, it unleashes a series of beeps — and then furiously starts to scrub the floor.

Yes, the floor — instead of waking up in a bed, you find yourself lying on a hallway, white walls and white floor surrounding you. You don’t have long to stare at the minimalistic look of everything around you before the little bot starts poking you again, the word MOVE blinking across its visor.

So better get out of its way! Perhaps you’re on the hallway on your own and leave on your own… or perhaps there’s someone else, sleeping near you. Maybe do them the courtesy of waking them up before this little angry bot does! Or perhaps you’re the poor soul still sleeping and needing a rescue before the beeps make it to you.

2.0   If you need a visit to the infirmary, the situation may be more dire — perhaps there’s blood on the wall that you wake up against, your clothes may be dirty or ragged… whatever it is that has happened to you before waking here and has left you injured, it sure doesn’t create a reassuring sight. Best get to the infirmary as soon as possible.... with some assistance, perhaps.

Once upright, you may notice there’s something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

TOP

// PART II. the new staycation

So what else is there to do but to explore? Best get to know what is now your new home.

3.0   The most pressing question that you might ask yourself is: but where will I stay? The question is answered once you walk through the winding white corridors to the common area. Behind it, there are three types of rooms: those with one bed, two beds and four beds. The rooms are clinical yet clean, and sparsely-furnished — and most importantly, most are occupied. So be prepared to get some roomies!

4.0   You may find your way to the armory, where you can try to work the machine there to make yourself a weapon — perhaps to replace one that didn’t come with you to the station… or maybe you want to be prepared for the future. The recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: to put it to good use, head to the training room, where the entire purpose is to provide you with a space to spar and train to your heart’s content!

5.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself training, it’s time to grab a bite. For that, you should head to the kitchen, which… seems to be filled with a lot of leftovers: takeout boxes with an assorted collection of pizza slices, kung pao chicken, lamb curry... not to mention the entire tray of chocolate brownies. Feel free to eat your fill — or if takeout isn’t your cup of tea, open one of the large fridges to pick fresh ingredients and make your own lunch.

6.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds the characters can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion surrounds anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. A new addition is a flower garden where there once was a meadow — now, roses, camellias, lilies and dozens of other flowers sway in the wind, all varieties in their own flower beds, with a winding path of stones leading through them. The path leads to where a bridge rises over a sparkling, babbling brook.

Here, it is easy to forget you are in space at all. Perhaps that gives you comfort, or just makes you miss the real nature all the more.

7.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering over nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes containing assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging, and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to make!

8.0   If it’s items you’re lacking, though, some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi everyone, just letting you know there’s a new supply drop. It should be a little more… well, organised than before. If you made requests for items earlier, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on it. There’s clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books… even a couple of CDs, and a few cute stuffed animals. So sort through what there is and grab what you want, before someone else does!

// PART III. bright young things

(CW: POTENTIAL BODY MODIFICATION)

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room.

Step past the threshold and the doors will slide shut with a quiet woosh. Nothing suspicious; nothing to worry about. But before you can really get a sense of your environment (a grey, large-ish empty room, no furniture, no discernable objects to provide markers), the room goes dark, and then … there’s really no other way to describe it: the room transforms.

You find yourself in a club. The music is upbeat, loud, but not too loud. Down a short flight of steps flanking the bar and seating is the open floor with more tables and booths bathed in a warm, dim glow of light, and at the very end of the room is a stage with its bright spotlight showcasing its performers — though, at the moment, the stage is empty.

9.0   When you take a step forward, you’ll feel a presence gently push at your chest or your shoulder — a tall and jovial man resembling a well-dressed bartender from the top up (the rest of him appears to move along wheels) approaches with a tall flute glass in hand. Its contents are sparkly and blue.

“Hello, there. Care for a drink? I’m afraid you won’t be allowed to continue until you do, and I assure you this is entirely safe. All effects you might experience remain only so long as you participate in this simulation.

Will you proceed? Please respond ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.”

There’s something a little strange about his voice, a cadence that doesn’t sound quite natural even when the simulation is so realistic otherwise. Once you’ve given your consent, the bartender continues.

“One thing you should know: there is an orb within this club. This drink will aid in your ultimate retrieval of the orb. To better blend in with our patrons, you may experience temporary changes within your body. Good luck.”

10.0   It seems the bartender wasn’t lying. Once you’ve allowed the drink (tasty, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, effervescent, with light notes of your fondest childhood memory) to settle in your stomach you might experience a myriad of effects on your body, ranging from a change in skin colour (pink? green? blue with spots?), an additional limb or two (or three), a tail or wings, or cybernetic parts such as lie-detecting eyes or a tongue that can uncover truths and lies in others. If you happen to find another Orber within the room and both of you have consumed the offered drink, you might find yourself experiencing a full bodyswap.

None of the changes are painful; if anything, they might not even be noticeable until you look into a mirror, look down at your limb-in-question, or your companion points it out.

11.0   The moment you approach the stage, a performer will appear as if out of thin air and begin to sing, her voice strong and smoky and melodic. Her enthralling performance could put you into a trance, but you have an orb to find and a personal task to accomplish, so it’s time to put your best foot forward and do a little investigating.

Talking to some of the patrons might prove fruitful as some of them are convinced that the stage has never sounded or looked so good, like there’s something giving performers that extra oomph that no one can explain. It might be wise to wait until that last performance before you sneak up there — or maybe you want to do a little snooping around now, you know, while everyone’s distracted. Strategize with your fellow Orbers and uncover the location of this hidden orb.

N O T E:   The effects of the drink and the level of changes your character experiences is entirely up to you. Patrons of this fine club won’t bat an eye if you look a little like them.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   If you’ve been given a particular body change that might aid you in this mission, do not use it to your advantage.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber to uncover the hidden location.

C   Get up on stage and put on a performance during the simulation. Your song choice will determine the outcome of success in your investigation.

FOR SOME FUN:

Have a listen for some clues about the second mission.
(Hint: there are four clues in total.)

Yeah. Feels like shit too.

[She takes a hit for herself and then passes him the vape. ]

Got shot about a week ago trying to save my current beau from some headhunters. I guess it reopened when I got brought here.

[She nods to him, and his own wound. ]

What about you?

[personal profile] elbowroom 2021-08-21 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
My story?

[She takes another sip from her coffee and thinks for a second, before just deciding to come out with the truth, more or less.]

I'm from LA, originally, but I do a lot of work up and down the west coast. Mostly smuggling. Been in Seattle lately, working as the hacker for this one crew of absolute maniacs.

[You know, crime stuff. Ordinarily she wouldn't be as open about this kind of thing, but they're in a space ship in another dimension right now. What's Tony gonna do, call the cops?]

What about you?
elbowroom: (Smile)

[personal profile] elbowroom 2021-08-21 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[With that reaction, Jonesy immediately clocks him as being from somewhere without 3D printing technology. That's cute.]

Its kind of complicated but also deceptively simple. I'll show it to you sometime.

[Simple for someone living in 2072, at least.

She smiles when he asks about her own project. Nobody ever asks about her projects.
]

Oh, I'm taking another look at the code for my exploit program. It's - [She passes for a moment. Right, this guy doesn't know about 3d printers. She should probably get a point of reference about what he does know.] -how much do you know about computers?

[Eyebrows rising in surprise, Daisy doesn't question whether or not she knew what she was doing in there.]

Probably a smart idea. Last time we went on a mission, it got pretty chaotic.

[That's putting it mildly.]

You looking for anything in particular?
morethan084: (listening/hovering)

[She's struggling not to just ask him what happened, and forces herself to move over to the cabinets where the ice packs were kept.]

What are you working on?

[Yelena doesn’t answer right away. She could play it cool and be cagey about it. But that’s more Natasha’s thing than Yelena’s. Besides between her outburst and her distinctive Russian accent, it’s obvious enough why she’s upset, or who she’s upset about. There isn’t a lot of point in denying it.

When she finally speaks she doesn’t look at him, she’s focused on the coffee maker. Poking at it to turn it on, and then opening the canister of coffee she found in the pantry.]

She's my sister.

[Her tone is flat, and if he’s going to speak in present tense, so will she. Natasha being dead didn’t make her any less Yelena's sister. And besides, it makes denial easier and she isn’t in a hurry to grieve any more openly in front of Tony Stark than she already had.]

[Daisy smiles in amusement at her response. She's not wrong and it does look extremely real. Squinting up at the sun, Daisy speaks up again.]

Yeah, but it's just an illusion.

[Looking over at her again, Daisy smiles gently at her.]

I'm Daisy.
morethan084: (disappointed)

[personal profile] morethan084 2021-08-21 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It is.

[Daisy watches him, frowning sympathetically when she realizes he must be new. She remembers how disorientating it was for her, so she can imagine he must be feeling the same way as well.]

We've only gone on one mission so far and it wasn't Earth. At least not a version of Earth I'm familiar with.

[Yelena shrugs one shoulder slightly as she stirs through what’s left of the curry.]

A Glock would be nice, but I’m not picky.

[Widows are trained in an array of weaponry. She can probably make use of whatever's available.]

[The construct? Ah, yes, the AI. The same Viveca that refused to answer his questions earlier after his brief trip to the infirmary. He knew the machine had a name but he didn’t commit it to memory until now. It’s a little frustrating that the AI that controls the station isn’t more helpful.]

I suppose beggars cannot be choosers. [He all but grumbles with a hint of disdain in his tone.] After all, I’m sure that we have Viveca to thank for being here.

[So there’s more than just a handful of people? That’s good to know, at least. Truth be told, he hasn’t seen too many others here during his exploration. The station feels oddly desolate sometimes.]

It seems we have more in common than we think. The royal line of Lucis has dedicated themselves to the eradication of Daemons and ghouls.

He halts at her startled interjection, and his hand simply hovers near his face before he starts to withdraw it in a slow and shaky movement. More and more, he's becoming aware that distress is really dictating his movements, inhibiting his focus, and his body definitely wants rest.

But he doesn't.

Whatever can help. I can't...sleep now! Not knowing...

Blue remains in place, trying to make sense of the person approaching. There's never been such innocent curiosity so devoid of underlying maliciousness focused at him that wasn't from a Mu.

"It..." He finds himself at a loss, needing a moment to shake his head a little and refocus out of his wonder. "It is just...another way. Unique to us. Or so I thought..."
firstroar: (pic#5952000)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-08-21 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue's mouth pulls in a doubtful frown. It's one thing for he himself to believe the illusion...but Blue can see the change! And he didn't take the drink!

Were he not so exhausted, he could muster more means to panic. Instead, he just exhales, closing his eyes and trying to sense beyond the afflicted man, reinforcing that, yes, it's just the two of them that are actual people.

Which means...interacting with the simulation in earnest. It's less than ideal.

"...Very well." Blue opens his eyes and looks back down at the afflicted man. "I will follow your instruction: Tell me where you want me to investigate and I shall do so in your stead."
firstroar: (pic#6891997)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-08-21 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The weight of the coat quells some of Blue's trembling and does help him get back a bit of focus lost by being completely overwhelmed by the change of environment. But it makes what's spoken to him make even less sense.

Blue groans, bracing against a violent throb of pain that seems out to stop him from even trying to understand what's happening.

Don't...understand...

[The Doctor busts out into a certain Disney song. One might be able to tell that he might really know some of this with how soulful he sings. Ten isn't a half a bad singer]

You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know
You don't know
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew

he has ostensibly been here for at least ten minutes. ]

[Percy does not startle right out of his skin, but the thing he’s working on does spark briefly. He pushes it away, and it looks like a half-finished explosive arrow. Apparently someone else is hoping Vex is around here somewhere as well.]

Vax, I’m fine. I ate breakfast, and that was, what, just an hour ago?

[Percy, it’s past lunchtime. But he puts the tools down, turns fully to Vax.]

Just how long have you been standing there for? [He would not put it past Vax to have been standing there the entire time.]

I ate lunch and then went looking around for the rest of you, if that gives you a proper idea of the time.

[ he says this sort of lightheartedly, raising an eyebrow, because this is just lending credence to his no-wonder-i-couldnt-find-you-anywhere-you-haven't-moved-in-hours theory. anyway, vax's eyes flick briefly to the arrow before back to percy's face, sort of giving him a once over - making sure he's uninjured, definitely. ]

There's a hesitation in the face of that hand - as much because of the person offering it as much as the consequence of taking it. Physical touch opens doors to deeper thoughts and understanding, and while Blue doesn't shy away from it around his own kind, it's rarely gone over well outside of them.

"If I touch you...I might see more than you're willing to share," he warns, searching the Doctor's face for some change in attitude.

"Oh? That so? Ah, then that sounds perfect for me. What say you and I dance for a little bit? I'm probably a bit rusty myself."

He absolutely was not rusty in the least. But his new sparring partner didn't need to know that. He'd go gentle on the fellow, he promised himself. Probably. Maybe.

His inner thoughts didn't show in his relaxed posture or his easy-going smile as he pushed off the wall. In fact his clothing from home probably didn't look very conductive to any overt movement at a glance. Yet he headed over towards an occupied sparring ring and hopped in anyway, hoping the other man would follow.

the other body, to call it in some way, is the one of a young man in what appears to be a rather formal school uniform. he's completely out and doesn't react, at least not until the touch is a little harsher.

it is not a gentle awakening. that breaching hand is suddenly held in a death grip and those half-lidded eyes scream murder at its owner. before the other can probably react, the young man lets go of him, and all sudden, the expression in his face shifts to something far worried and gentle that one has to wonder if the first reaction wasn't but a mere illusion.

We are deeply sorry to interrupt your job, we'll be out of your way right now, right? ( and with that, he turns at his newest acquaintance, giving him a little smile. )

Peter Quill | Gotg/MCU | ota

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2021-08-21 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)

01 | Wake me up before you go-go...

To say that this is the first time Peter woke up from sleeping on the floor would be a lie. It had happened so many times in the past, that it doesn't faze him anymore. Being raised by the Ravagers had been anything but glamorous, and he'd learned the habit of falling asleep on any available surface.

The constant beeping is annoying, but not enough to fully wake him up. He reaches blindly to the side, aiming for the snooze button of what he figures in his sleepy state is the alarm clock. The result: He ends patting the little cleaning robot's head, which only causes a new wave of (much louder) angry beeping.

Groaning, eyes still closed, Peter reaches for the 'alarm clock' again, grabs the robot, and just...yeets him away, casually throwing the poor thing in the air. If someone happens to be walking by that same hallway and got hit in the chest by a furious and alarmed robot, well...accidents happen. The Guardian is turning around on the floor and trying to get back to sleep, don't mind him.

A morning person, Peter Quill is not.

04 | You're not in Kansas anymore

Peter is walking around the ship while munching on a chocolate brownie he grabbed from the mess that was in the kitchen, trying to see if he can find a way to contact his team - his communicator seems to be dead- or if he spots any familiar faces. Now and then he stops some passerby to ask if they had seen a talking raccoon, a walking teenage tree, or a lady with antennae on her head. To say that he gets odd looks in return would be putting it kindly. Some people even try to direct him to the infirmary instead, to get him checked for a concussion.

He ends in the armory, figuring that if a place has weapons, his teammates are bound to be drawn to it at some point. Peter has his quad blasters and other devices with him, but he wants to make sure they hadn't been tampered with while he was unconscious. He finds a table and starts to make a small inventory of what's in his person, leaving items on the table in an almost comical display of never ending gadgets. His jacket and pants have a lot of pockets, and he likes them that way for a reason.

There's his Zune, thanks the Gods, both of his quad blasters, a pair of energy bolas he forgot he carried with him, the jet boot attachments that allow him to fly, a flat metal round disc that once active turns to into an aero rig, his lock picking tools, a gravity mine... A glass orb rolls down the table and bounces a couple of times on the floor, then moves away, only to be stopped by someone's feet. Peter looks over his shoulder, down at the orb, and then up at the other person.

"Oh,...Could you hand me that? Try not to shake it too much, it's a plasma sphere that can disintegrate anything in a cloud of its released plasma if shattered." He says casually, as if he's talking about the weather. Peter is pretty sure the plasma sphere is out of juice, so he's not that worried about it.

10.0/11.0 | Can anybody find me...

Peter has downed the drink without a second, following the belief that, the sooner he got things going, the more quickly he would have the chance to find one of those orbs. His scalp tingles for a few seconds, but nothing particular seems to happen. Peter checks his skin color, the number of limbs he has, and the number of eyes...everything seems normal, and he feels just as always. Because they're on the top of his head, the fails to notice the two new curved golden horns now visible among his curls.

The Guardian feels at ease around crowds and clubs, simulated or not, and even more so if there's music. Since he's aiming to accomplish a task here, it doesn't really take Peter long to make his way onto the stage. Hell, he's even having fun, soon caring less about what he came here to do in the first place and enjoying himself while singing Somebody to Love by Freddy Mercury. He even tries to get the people present to join him for the chorus, but how well that goes is up in the air.

"Not bad, uh?" He grins to his partner in crime once he steps down from the stage. And then murmurs in a lower voice. "Did you find anything useful while I was distracting them? Any clue were the orb might be?"
