Well... the Empire fell about twenty years after it was formed. A Rebellion cropped up around the planets it tried to keep oppressed. But when it fell, some loyalists and the Emperor survived and tried to reform it with the First Order. They fell to the Resistance shortly before I got here.

So, with any luck, I'm not fighting anyone anymore.
