OCTOBER + NOVEMBER TDM.

T D M . 0 4

// PART I. a crimson dream

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

These are the words that ring in your ears, as a slowly growing red glow surrounds you in this dreamspace, filling you with an acute sense of dread — and whatever it is that you’ve just agreed to might have changed everything forever.

It is this sense of dream that startles you awake, and as it fades, and your heart begins to slow into something resembling your normal tempo, you'll notice something you should have picked up on immediately: you are not in your bed.

1.0   White walls, clinical yet clean, sparsely-furnished rooms. You may wake in one of three rooms: a room with only one bed, a room with two beds, or a room with four beds. Those waking up in rooms with more than one bed notice that they are not alone. Perhaps the other occupants of the room are still sleeping, dreaming the same dream as you just did, or a regular one after returning to the station just barely a week ago … or perhaps you wake up to the other person in the room watching you.

What you do is entirely up to you: yelping in surprise when you wake to someone staring at you is always an option. Or maybe you’ll try to sneak away before anyone notices you...

2.0   Those with life-threatening injuries will find themselves waking up in the infirmary, in a regular hospital bed. Most of their injuries have been treated, and any lingering illnesses or conditions will have designated medicine bottles on the table next to the bed.

White curtains surround the bed on both sides, providing an illusion of privacy. But is that a rustling sound you hear? A set of footsteps? Perhaps you’re not the only one in need of some medical attention.

In fact if you’re very badly off, you might want to hold out hope for some company - you can’t stay in the infirmary forever. You'll have to make your way through the hallways of the station to the living quarters, and claim a room and a bed there.

Once upright, you might notice something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

// PART II. hotel spacefornia

So what else is there to do but to explore, right? Best get to know your way around your new home.

3.0   When trying to decide where you go, you might find your way to the armory, where you can make attempts to work the machine and create a weapon for yourself — maybe replace the one that didn’t come with you to the station ... or maybe you decide to prepare something for the future. Any recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: why not put them to the test and head over to the training room, where the entire purpose of this space is to provide you with opportunities to spar and train to your heart’s content!

4.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself from training, your stomach will prompt you for something to eat. For that you should head to the kitchens and the mess hall, which is equipped with all the basic appliances you might need, along with some more unusual ones (including an ... interesting-looking waffle maker and popcorn machine), as well as ingredients for most generic Earth-based dishes. For some reason, there are also some bags of now-cold popcorn left abandoned over the counters.

5.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds you can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion builds up around anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. The illusion has been programmed to reflect the seasons — the leaves in the trees are currently bright with all the colours of autumn: orange and red and yellow; and the air is crisp and clean. If you follow the path, you'll be led to a bridge rising over a sparkling, babbling brook, a few fallen leaves floating on the water and falling around you like very bright raindrops.

Here, it's easy to forget (for a moment, anyway) that you are in space at all. Maybe that gives you comfort, or maybe it just makes you miss the real thing all that much more.

6.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering with objects over wandering through nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes filled with assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to!

7.0   Some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message. If it’s items you’re lacking, you may just be in luck.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi again, everyone. Those who’ve been here for longer know the deal, but to those new here: there’s a new supply drop. Hopefully you’ll find useful things there. If you made any requests for items, before, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform located near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on top of it. There are clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books ... and in one pile, a varied collection of what seems to be Halloween decorations and costumes. So, sort through the piles and grab what you want before someone else does! (But don't forget: sharing is caring.)

// PART III. trick or treat

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room. It’s been equipped with a new simulation to show you the drill where the missions are concerned, so step in and see what it has in store for you!

8.0   The moment the doors slide shut behind you, the space goes dark and then quickly lights up again, but instead of the blank empty walls you initially walked into, you’re surrounded by colour and lights, the sound of music and chatter, and the smells of deep-fried foods and overly sweet beverages. Someone calls, ‘Step right up, step right up!’ while another voice from somewhere starts to cheer as an electrical sound of a buzzer goes off, announcing its winner for prizes.

It seems that you’ve entered the Carnival simulation, so come on in and have a little fun.

There are booths spread out across these simulated grounds, each one offering food, drink or games. As you wander past you’ll notice that there is a touch of macabre to everything — the colours are black and orange and violet and red, the drinks offered have strange names, some you recognize like ‘Witch’s Brew’ and ‘Eye of Newt’, and some you might not, like ‘Viole(n)t Breeze’ and ‘Undead Essence’. It’s as though all of the things strange and wonderful find themselves spread across the entire universe to unite here.

Once you’ve had your fill of food and games, you can make your way past the little market area to a brightly glittering ferris wheel with carts rotating in a cycle, enticing you to try it out. Or if you’d rather be spooked, there is a hokey little ‘haunted mansion’ to your left that won’t take more than a handful of minutes to move through. Creatures and ghosts will pop out at you when you least expect it, their masked faces exaggerated with paint and some fairly realistic prosthetics to get the adrenaline pumping. Take a friend with you, or go it alone — just try to keep your cool through it all.

9.0   Eventually, once you’ve had your fill of the festivities, you may notice a wooden sign pointing you past the haunted mansion. Pressed on it is a round mark, and you remember that this is simulating a mission — you’re not here to just have fun, but to try and retrieve a simulated orb.

As you follow the path, you’ll find the hustle and bustle of the carnival growing quieter. All around you, there is nothing but woods — and hold on, where did all that mist come from? It surrounds you slowly, the ground seeming slightly damp as you keep walking… and arrive at a graveyard.

So the orb… it’s there, hidden in one of the graves? There’s nothing else to do but to start walking and looking at the gravestones — but when you do, you’ll be shocked to find some of the names are terribly, terribly familiar.

They might be names of your loved ones, people who were still in perfect health back home; and yet here those stones bear their names, along with an epitaph that brings tears to your eyes. And if you move closer… you may experience a flash of colour and light, and a memory suddenly plays out in front of you: the death of your loved one, whoever that may be.

Or perhaps the name you see on a gravestone is something else even more familiar to you: your own. But ... how, right? Reluctantly, your heart pounding, you approach with tentative steps, and yes — the name does not change. It's yours right there ... and it's your own death that you witness when the grave’s spell binds you.

N O T E:   The deaths witnessed are intended to be non-canon deaths, so feel free to go wild inventing them -- this also goes for characters who are canonically dead. These are “alternate universe deaths”, not canon.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   Find the grave of a teammate and witness their death.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber win in one of the Carnival games.

C   Scare a teammate in the haunted house.

( It's odd, how you can realize you miss someone you haven't seen in nearly two months, and also be utterly exasperated by their reappearance in your life.

Bones sighs. )

Well, at least Jim will be happy you're here.

"I see." Spock's lip twitches as he processes that information, adding it to the data set that he's trying to make about this place. For whatever mission he may be embarking on here, it is only logical for him to put the mission of gathering information first so that he may reevaluate periodically if he is doing the truly logical thing.

"Then it appears we truly are out of step with time here. I've seen you on a near-daily basis up until I arrived."

And there's no reason to hold back that information from Jim. They should share what they know with each other when it's relevant and pertinent to.

Tell me: Is anyone else from the Enterprise here?

[ He doesn't need more surprises, he tells himself, but he also doesn't need more reminders of what he may be giving up if he completes his mission here. The respect he feels for McCoy is hard-won, but it is there. He has saved them all countless times from injury and illness, all while insulting them for winding up in his care in the first place. Jim alone would be dead at least half a dozen times over and Spock can admit (to himself) that the man is a very good doctor. ]

I was under the impression I would be among strangers here.

[She chews for a few moments, mulling the flavour over.]

A little sweet, but I do not mind it.

[That is the easier question to answer. Swallowing, she ponders how to answer that. She has never spoke overly about her past, not all the intimate details anyway.]

It... was very straightforward fare.

Yeah, well, they really don't give you much more than the elevator pitch before you get here, Spock.

( He isn't without sympathy here, he went through the same thing. Bones takes him in more thoroughly now, considering the commander for a moment with a sigh. There's more that Spock isn't saying, he's known him long enough now to understand that. )

It's just Jim and I. There's about sixty of us, never any more, sometimes less. New folks come in all at once at regular intervals, usually once a month. How much of the station have you seen so far?

I've seen most of what we have access to, though I had paused here longer than I intended.

[ Organizing can be an almost meditative act for some. He supposes that's what kept him here. Sorting wires and little pieces had given him a moment to clear his head and collect his thoughts in light of the offer that had brought him here. ]

Have you found any other patterns related to the coming and going of the people here?

[ He wonders if they are getting what they were offered or merely disappearing. As much as he wants what he's been offered, he doesn't trust anything he's told directly here until he sees it proven. ]

No, not yet.

( He'll just grab another chair and pull it around, tucking his PADD beneath his arm when he sits. )

We've been told that some may choose to go home, or the orb randomly decides it's time for them to leave. ( Bones grimaces at that. )

Not a possibility I really care for. ( He nods at Spock, jumping subjects for a sec. ) When are you from?

Practicing to not get rusty? We have a training room too, if you need to use it. [ If it helps any, it's Peter - I've already seen it all - Quill who caught Toby, he's not going to go around telling others the guy's secrets. ]

Less that is obvious and more than you are a new face I didn't see before. [ He smiles and offers a hand. ] Peter Quill, Guardian of the Galaxy now turned orb hunter. A pleasure to meet you.

Peter doesn't go to the lab often, it's not due to lack of interest and more that he's really not an engineer. He doesn't feel the urge to mess with chemicals or wires, to study or build things the same way others might. More often than not, he works with his weapons in the armory but this morning he came to the lab to look around the storage cabinets for some metal pieces he needs to finish a project.

Being greeted by a new orber who is encircling himself by all sorts of cables and gears is not what he expected to see but this is exactly what Rocket would have done and said, just in a more condescending tone. There's amusement in Peter's voice when he answers.

"Very generous of you, thank you. Do you need help?"

[ It's unsurprising to Spock that the idea of the orb making decisions would make the doctor uncomfortable. He has often shown an emotional response to the unknown and while Spock does not share that particular sense of dread, there is a lack of ease that comes with being at the mercy of an unknown and untrusted entity. ]

We have just left the Yorktown to assist in a rescue operation in an uncharted nebula. I believe the exact stardate was 2263.2.

"I do not require assistance at this time." The answer is straight forward, without warmth or intended insult. Spock is doing fine on his own and he is not in a command position here, therefore he should refrain from handing out orders unless they seem necessary.

Then he glances up and reminds himself that humans do not always word things with a clear intention. It's something he has gotten much better about reading, however he has also done his best to teach the humans he knows most closely how pointlessly illogical it is to leave so much up for interpretation.

"However if you would like to help, I will not stop you."

( Peter, just barely, manages to refrain from upgrading his crap to something more... colorful. he instead leaks air in a strangled tone, a prolonged shhhhhhhhhh like the world's most aggressive librarian.

what are the chances? it can't be. but can it? so many people from the same stretch of universe that know another version of Peter Parker are already here. what if their Peter just showed up to round out the crew? Peter's (as in, this one's) stomach ties up in knots. is he ready to really face this if it is what he think it is? he's not sure that he is, and yet. does he have a choice?
)

I'm sorry. I'm being weird. I know I'm being weird. You're right, it is crazy. Just, uh... bear me on this one. Have you ever heard of string theory? Like, multiple universes, tiny little changes, different results that spread like wildfire and it looks completely different somehow. Like that Ashton Kutcher movie. [And that reaction sure is a sign, Peter thinks, as Peter lets out that particular sound. He feels the hairs on his arms raise in response, and he wonders if it's his 'Peter Tingle' or just regular old goosebumps.

He puts down his piece of...well, he's not exactly sure what kind of fruit it is, only that it's delicious, and stares.]

No, uh. It's fine. It's totally fine. This whole situation is weird, right?

[He says, as if his own voice isn't cracking and changing pitch every other word as he contemplates about the possible meanings to be had in this encounter.

Fatigue nips at Jon's heels. The bed is deeply uncomfortable (he'd even slept in his clothes, it seems!), awakening to such bright lights is a pain, and the room doesn't smell like the Pembroke. He steps out of the confined space immediately, only to run into someone else in the corridor.

'Pardon me,' he says, reflexively, lips pulling into a polite smile, one that's careful to show no teeth. 'I'm still getting my bearings. Do you know if it's daylight outside?'

It's not a bad plan; for his part, Jim sometimes feels that he's been gathering information for the past six months, with varying degrees of success. Mostly a lack thereof. He tries not to let it get him down.

"Right. It was the same thing with Bones. It might even be that we don't even come from the same point in time," he says, quickly adding. "What's the last thing you remember?"

Spock turns to asses the man and his question. It stands to reason that he doesn't know where he is. Spock, himself, only has the vaguest of ideas, as space is vast and he currently has no coordinates, but Spock can work with that until he can get more pertinent information.

"As we are in space, it is highly unlikely that there is no light reaching us from a sun, however calling it daylight would imply that it has a bearing on the station's current time of day."

"We were heading for an uncharted Nebula on a rescue mission from the Yorktown."

It's not a lie, because the sentence is a statement of fact, but the most pressing thing on his mind is the death of the Ambassador. He can admit that to himself, at least. His thoughts have been lying with the duties that call to him now, though it's a duty that will be rendered irrelevant if he is successful here.

"If you require more specifics than that, I can provide them, Captain."

As expected.

[ It did not seem to be something the Enterprise would struggle with, though things have been known to be unpredictable aboard the ship. ]

This place does appear to offer some sort of temporal effect. I would be curious to know the source of its power before fully entrusting it to deliver its promises.

[ But the offer is too tempting not to explore its possibility. Spock isn't sure he can argue the logic on that, but Ambassador Spock once told him to not use logic for once and he thinks this may be one of those times where it's warranted to follow what humans tend to call a gut feeling. ]
winscenario: (sixty three.)

Ah. That tells Jim all he needs to know, and at Spock's question, he promptly shakes his head.

"No, I remember that clearly. I'm from after we finished that mission, and came back to Yorktown." He went into further detail with Bones, but then Bones was from a little farther ahead than Spock, it seemed. So he doesn't elaborate much more than that, though he won't deny Spock the details if he asks.

"The timeline discrepancies aren't the most worrying thing you'll have to think about here, for what it's worth. The three of us aren't too far apart in terms of timeline at least, so there is that." It'd be more complicated if, say, any of them came from a point in time when they'd only just met.

Spock raises an eyebrow at that. Timeline discrepancies hadn't been at the top of his concern list. In fact, he has an entire laundry list of concerns about what is really happening here and how something or someone can offer something so vast with such a nebulous cost, but he's more curious about what Jim thinks he should be worried about.

"And what are the more worrying things I'll have to handle aside from timeline discrepancies and what I can only assume will be your usual reckless disregard for protocol?"

Thank you, Doctor. I will be sure to read through them thoroughly. It should provide a point of reference to start.

I trust you will inform me of anything that has been left out of the reports.
winscenario: (fifty three.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2021-12-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
He just shoots a flat stare at Spock for that. For one, he has been doing very well regarding protocols as of late, thank you very much. Two, they're on a whole other reality here, so there are no protocols for them to worry about. Fight him on that.

"These missions, for one. They're incredibly dangerous, in different ways they tend to split us up into smaller groups, and more often than not people suffer injuries, ranging from light to severe. No one's died yet, but at the rate we're going," he trails off. Well, it's only a matter of time, Jim thinks.

"The whole purpose to our being here, too. The real reason why we're gathering these orbs, or why they want to be reunited, what will happen if we get them all together. What might happen if Degar's force field stops working and the orbs' powers expand beyond the confines of the North Wing. I think those are much more immediate concerns."
