OCTOBER + NOVEMBER TDM.

T D M . 0 4

// PART I. a crimson dream

… What are you willing to do to erase your regret from existence?

These are the words that ring in your ears, as a slowly growing red glow surrounds you in this dreamspace, filling you with an acute sense of dread — and whatever it is that you’ve just agreed to might have changed everything forever.

It is this sense of dream that startles you awake, and as it fades, and your heart begins to slow into something resembling your normal tempo, you'll notice something you should have picked up on immediately: you are not in your bed.

1.0   White walls, clinical yet clean, sparsely-furnished rooms. You may wake in one of three rooms: a room with only one bed, a room with two beds, or a room with four beds. Those waking up in rooms with more than one bed notice that they are not alone. Perhaps the other occupants of the room are still sleeping, dreaming the same dream as you just did, or a regular one after returning to the station just barely a week ago … or perhaps you wake up to the other person in the room watching you.

What you do is entirely up to you: yelping in surprise when you wake to someone staring at you is always an option. Or maybe you’ll try to sneak away before anyone notices you...

2.0   Those with life-threatening injuries will find themselves waking up in the infirmary, in a regular hospital bed. Most of their injuries have been treated, and any lingering illnesses or conditions will have designated medicine bottles on the table next to the bed.

White curtains surround the bed on both sides, providing an illusion of privacy. But is that a rustling sound you hear? A set of footsteps? Perhaps you’re not the only one in need of some medical attention.

In fact if you’re very badly off, you might want to hold out hope for some company - you can’t stay in the infirmary forever. You'll have to make your way through the hallways of the station to the living quarters, and claim a room and a bed there.

Once upright, you might notice something in your ear: an earpiece that, when you become aware of it, quickly runs you through the instructions for how to use the network, a recorded message by a female voice that explains exactly why you’re here… and leaves you with a map of the station.

// PART II. hotel spacefornia

So what else is there to do but to explore, right? Best get to know your way around your new home.

3.0   When trying to decide where you go, you might find your way to the armory, where you can make attempts to work the machine and create a weapon for yourself — maybe replace the one that didn’t come with you to the station ... or maybe you decide to prepare something for the future. Any recently-returned team members will surely recommend having a functional weapon with you.

And speaking of weapons: why not put them to the test and head over to the training room, where the entire purpose of this space is to provide you with opportunities to spar and train to your heart’s content!

4.0   After you’ve exhausted yourself from training, your stomach will prompt you for something to eat. For that you should head to the kitchens and the mess hall, which is equipped with all the basic appliances you might need, along with some more unusual ones (including an ... interesting-looking waffle maker and popcorn machine), as well as ingredients for most generic Earth-based dishes. For some reason, there are also some bags of now-cold popcorn left abandoned over the counters.

5.0   A welcome reprieve to the cold, dark space that surrounds you can be found in the sunlight room. A skillful illusion builds up around anyone who steps inside the room: you can hear the trilling of birds, feel a light breeze caress your skin as you walk through a grass field. The illusion has been programmed to reflect the seasons — the leaves in the trees are currently bright with all the colours of autumn: orange and red and yellow; and the air is crisp and clean. If you follow the path, you'll be led to a bridge rising over a sparkling, babbling brook, a few fallen leaves floating on the water and falling around you like very bright raindrops.

Here, it's easy to forget (for a moment, anyway) that you are in space at all. Maybe that gives you comfort, or maybe it just makes you miss the real thing all that much more.

6.0   If you’d rather choose tinkering with objects over wandering through nature, the lab is guaranteed to provide you with some entertainment. Glass vials and jars of chemicals sit on shelves in a surprisingly beautiful display of colour on one side of the room, while the other side of the room contains stacks of boxes filled with assorted equipment: cords, bolts, panels, buttons, gears, gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. The downside is that the parts available seem to have no apparent method to their sorting. So get digging and you may just find exactly what you need to make what you’ve always wanted to!

7.0   Some time after your arrival, the earpiece alerts you to a new message. If it’s items you’re lacking, you may just be in luck.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi again, everyone. Those who’ve been here for longer know the deal, but to those new here: there’s a new supply drop. Hopefully you’ll find useful things there. If you made any requests for items, before, you should find them in a separate pile near the platform.

Indeed, the platform located near the personal quarters is still whirring with power, and new items form neat piles on top of it. There are clothes, shoes, dishware, skincare, books ... and in one pile, a varied collection of what seems to be Halloween decorations and costumes. So, sort through the piles and grab what you want before someone else does! (But don't forget: sharing is caring.)

// PART III. trick or treat

Whether you’re a quick study and you’ve become settled into life on the station, or you want to get the full lay of the land (in a manner of speaking) first, if you decide to explore the hall past the control room, you’ll eventually come across the simulation room. It’s been equipped with a new simulation to show you the drill where the missions are concerned, so step in and see what it has in store for you!

8.0   The moment the doors slide shut behind you, the space goes dark and then quickly lights up again, but instead of the blank empty walls you initially walked into, you’re surrounded by colour and lights, the sound of music and chatter, and the smells of deep-fried foods and overly sweet beverages. Someone calls, ‘Step right up, step right up!’ while another voice from somewhere starts to cheer as an electrical sound of a buzzer goes off, announcing its winner for prizes.

It seems that you’ve entered the Carnival simulation, so come on in and have a little fun.

There are booths spread out across these simulated grounds, each one offering food, drink or games. As you wander past you’ll notice that there is a touch of macabre to everything — the colours are black and orange and violet and red, the drinks offered have strange names, some you recognize like ‘Witch’s Brew’ and ‘Eye of Newt’, and some you might not, like ‘Viole(n)t Breeze’ and ‘Undead Essence’. It’s as though all of the things strange and wonderful find themselves spread across the entire universe to unite here.

Once you’ve had your fill of food and games, you can make your way past the little market area to a brightly glittering ferris wheel with carts rotating in a cycle, enticing you to try it out. Or if you’d rather be spooked, there is a hokey little ‘haunted mansion’ to your left that won’t take more than a handful of minutes to move through. Creatures and ghosts will pop out at you when you least expect it, their masked faces exaggerated with paint and some fairly realistic prosthetics to get the adrenaline pumping. Take a friend with you, or go it alone — just try to keep your cool through it all.

9.0   Eventually, once you’ve had your fill of the festivities, you may notice a wooden sign pointing you past the haunted mansion. Pressed on it is a round mark, and you remember that this is simulating a mission — you’re not here to just have fun, but to try and retrieve a simulated orb.

As you follow the path, you’ll find the hustle and bustle of the carnival growing quieter. All around you, there is nothing but woods — and hold on, where did all that mist come from? It surrounds you slowly, the ground seeming slightly damp as you keep walking… and arrive at a graveyard.

So the orb… it’s there, hidden in one of the graves? There’s nothing else to do but to start walking and looking at the gravestones — but when you do, you’ll be shocked to find some of the names are terribly, terribly familiar.

They might be names of your loved ones, people who were still in perfect health back home; and yet here those stones bear their names, along with an epitaph that brings tears to your eyes. And if you move closer… you may experience a flash of colour and light, and a memory suddenly plays out in front of you: the death of your loved one, whoever that may be.

Or perhaps the name you see on a gravestone is something else even more familiar to you: your own. But ... how, right? Reluctantly, your heart pounding, you approach with tentative steps, and yes — the name does not change. It's yours right there ... and it's your own death that you witness when the grave’s spell binds you.

N O T E:   The deaths witnessed are intended to be non-canon deaths, so feel free to go wild inventing them -- this also goes for characters who are canonically dead. These are “alternate universe deaths”, not canon.

Additionally, there are three personal tasks provided to each character as they enter the simulation. In-game, each character will be given one task. For the purposes of the test drive, we’re leaving it to players to pick a task for their character and run with it.

A   Find the grave of a teammate and witness their death.

B   Team up with a fellow Orber win in one of the Carnival games.

C   Scare a teammate in the haunted house.

[ 'Better to have love and lost than to never have loved at all' is an affirmation that Peter would also dispute. Those who hadn't loved are spared the pain of being separated from the one you love, something Peter is also familiar with. ]

The Cyberman? [ Peter almost asks if that has something to do with another book series The Doctor might enjoy, but the man looks like it was talking more to himself than to him. That's the thing with meeting the newbies, it's hard to tell if they're stressed out due to personal issues or because they find themselves trapped in a space station and away from their own home-world. ]

It's kind of a long story, really, it all started with space pirates when I was 8 years old. I've been to plenty of different planets and systems, but the universe is just so big...I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. [ He shrugs casually when the Doctor had no idea who he is, honestly, it's not a surprise either. ] It's all right. And yes, I assure you that different universes are totally a thing. Nice to meet you, Doctor...uhm... what kind of doctor? We don't have a lot of those here.

[ Sorry, that would be a no. ]

[He had, one that she had forced out of him, but one that she knew he would keep. Hindsight itself is twenty twenty, and had she known... But she hadn't, all the more troubled and annoyed and bothered by the words Thanos had tossed at her. Had she been a better liar...

It's intimate and recognizable as his chin rests against the top of her head, fitted up against him as she exhales softly, breathing slowing. Safe. Even after everything, he is her safe place. It still does feel surreal as she watches the rise and fall of his chest beneath her hooded lashes, feels the beat of his heart against her hand, his own breath tickling along her scalp.

Slower and slower, easing in as her breathing settles, that soft murmur as she nestles, lulled by his presence. Whatever may lay ahead, they have already passed through fire, together and apart, and she would not let him do it alone again.]

I can't think of anyone else I would rather go through this with.

Hormones, huh? ( again, it's... a bit surreal, having his own tricks turned back on him. Peter similarly makes excuses about suffering the classic teenage bottomless pit style appetite when people ask about how much he can put back. Peter's nose wrinkles as he dwells momentarily on how weird this is, even ten seconds in, though he doesn't comment.

until the coincidences and similarities sort of get to be too much. another Peter? c'mon now. what are the chances?
)

Crap. ( generally not the expected response to an introduction, it's just — look, Peter might have been aware of another version of himself, he just never imagined he'd meet the guy. and this is just so not how he would have done it, given the opportunity. he remembers how badly he took it, and dumping this on a newbie seems especially cruel. especially if the newbie is him?? oh god. this is making his head hurt. he looks a little shellshocked, he can't help it. Peter has never had any talent in keeping his feelings close to the chest.

but maybe, maybe he's spiraling for no reason? because really, what are the chances? they have to be nominal. right?
) Sorry. Hi. ( Peter holds his apple in his teeth to free his hand for a shake. and he takes another bite just to stall, decide on what he wants to say next. his aunt raised him right, he won't talk with his mouth full. ) Just, uh... just... okay, this might be a bit of a weird question, but bear with me on this one. Where are you from? ( New York might be too broad, though if this Peter was anything like him, he'd probably specify. Queens. the specificity was important, especially if you knew anything about the city. )
heartstumbles: (So far from the shore)

[personal profile] heartstumbles 2021-12-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Peter arches an eyebrow at that reaction, even more curious now. Something definitely seems up now, between the 'crap' and the look on the other Peter's face, and Peter doesn't know if he should be concerned, alarmed, or both at once.]

Yeah, uh. Hormones. Definitely.

[He tries to say this with confidence, like his words aren't actually bullshit disguising...well. His actual life.

He shakes Peter's hand, nodding.]
It's cool. It's...this is all crazy, right?

[It feels that way to him, at least, finding himself suddenly on a space station and having to adjust to leaving his whole world behind, even though it's kind of a blessing in disguise right now.

He tilts his head at the question. Weird, but not entirely unexpected. They're all of them from somewhere else besides here right? Still, Peter can't entirely shake the feeling that there's more to sharing a name with this Peter. He feels as though he's on the edge of a precipice; once he goes over that edge, there's no going back.

When he replies, his answer is automatic.]
Queens, and you?

[Daisy laughs at that, even if Zari would have no idea why.

She explains, so she doesn't look crazy.]

Sorry, it's just--

That's basically what it's like where I'm from too. I'm actually part of an organization that helps protect the world.
morethan084: (confused/listening)

[personal profile] morethan084 2021-12-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Daisy smiles sympathetically before looking around, squinting up at the sun.]

It's pretty realistic, isn't it? Makes you forget until you actually start--

[Okay. Don't send him into a spiral.]

You seem to be handling this pretty well. Not your first in weird situations like this or are you just really good at internalizing things?

There's a platform on the southeast wing that it comes in on.

[Daisy explains, and since they weren't that far from the kitchen it didn't take too long to get there. There's a plate of cookies out on a table, clearly left for anyone to take.

Taking one for herself, Daisy holds out one in offer to Gamora.]

Little bit of both?

[ Does he sound slightly uncertain? Possibly. It's said in earnest, at least, and Shang-chi shrugs a shoulder. ]

I mean, I've definitely been through the ringer in the past couple weeks as far as weird situations go. But I try not to freak out too much about things? Especially the things I can't really control?

[ He demonstrates this by gesturing lightly to the fake trees, and the sky above them. ]

[While she may be used to ships, she knows that they are all slightly different and function in unique manners. From those that she had been on with Thanos to Peter's own ships, Gamora knows enough basics about them but also understands this will be a learning process here to comprehend it completely.]

Thank you.

I. Arrival

OTA

It was a dream.
Just a really...strange, worrisome dream.
The sort of thing that makes you choke on panic and drops you into nothing seconds later.

And then it's lights and white. White, white, everywhere, clinical, pristine, too perfect.
Not home.
Not home at all.

Panic grips like a vice in his chest again as he comes to and he blinks against the brightness of the lights, confused and trying to sort through the thoughts running rapid-fire in his head. So many questions, so few answers. Where was he? How'd he get here? Shouldn't he know? Something tugs in the back of his mind, the way dreams leave quicker the harder you try to remember them, the way smoke slides through your fingers if you try to catch it.

"What the fuck?" he mutters in an emotion-thick tone, running a hand through his hair. Toby is no stranger to nights he doesn't remember, but this feels deeper than that. It's... he agreed to something, didn't he? But where... how... why does he have a sinking feeling he's going to end up regretting this decision?
(But that was the whole purpose wasn't it?
To change a regret).

ii. Exploring

OTA

The initial, jarring sensation of arrival over, all the brass tack basics explained to him, Toby takes to exploring the ship over the next couple of days. He might be found rummaging in the kitchen for something to eat or perhaps someone stumbles across him practicing his telekinesis– he'll try to hide it, or play it off as a street magician's level of illusion because he's not used to being open about his magic, but the keen observer may be able to tell it was more (or see through his imperfect lies).

He keeps close to the common living spaces, preferring to be around people more than being alone. He'll strike up a conversation with anyone who doesn't look overly busy with a casual, "So, how long have you been here?"

That's a very calm way to approach situations.

...

Doesn't always work out. Especially because most situations she's in are usually dangerous.]

Ey, nice trick. [ Peter comments casually as he spots Toby making things float. This part of the sunlight room is mostly empty at this time of the day, with people busy sunbathing or playing around some other part. Peter just happened to got for a stroll without looking where he was heading too and ended here.

He doesn't recognize the younger man, but he also doesn't seem terribly alarmed by the display of magic. He's seen it before, with Doctor Strange, Wanda, his own father Ego, and many others. It's always neat to him. ]
New here?

They looked different.

[Which isn't surprising. She isn't human and she's never been to Earth. The foods that she is used to would likely look alien to her as well. But... No, Thanos did not have cookies, and growing up, food had been scarce with the overpopulation of her planet. It wasn't until later that she had been introduced to a more wider variety of foods that aren't but about nutrition.]

But I also did not grow up with them.

[So she'll take a bite, gingerly chewing.]
spacedisaster: (Relaxed | Yes?)

It's a wrap ❤

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2021-12-13 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ There's no point now on wondering about what they could have done differently, it would only drive them crazy. If what the orbs can do once gathered is true, they will be able to fix things. If it isn't, at least they have each other, and they can work on righting wrongs the old-fashioned way, with time and effort.

All peter wants to think about now is Gamora's presence, her warm breath against his skin, the strong body pressing close to his own. He smiles at her words, humming in response to make it clear that he heard her, and he feels the same. His body relaxes too, but he will remain awake still for another long hour, making sure she's not having any nightmares, and being reassured that she's not going to disappear. They will have more time to talk from now on. ]

Metal men. Thar a race of beings that go around the universe and convert - upgrade organics into machines like them.

[Ten remarks dryly. Ten's ear twitches at space pirates. He's met a handful of sorts in his space travels and wonders if these are different space pirates.]

It's impossible too.

[Ten remarks with a cheeky tone and his brown eyes shine at Peter. Peter is exactly someone The Doctor would whisk away in his Tardis... If he knew where she was. There's a pouty face on The Doctor's face.]

Oh yes! Different universes are definitely a thing. Fell into one myself by mistake a long time ago... I was a different man then.

Just The Doctor.

[That confirms the multiverse theory]

Spock | Star Trek

[personal profile] dichotomized 2021-12-14 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
3.0+
Spock had woken up on the station with a hypothetical quandy echoing in his mind. Left attempting to answer it had found it to be less-than-hypothetical, but having his answer set out in front of him, following the path set out had seemed only logical.

There is much to learn about this place and the people who may inhabit it as well as the question of whether or not he can believe what he's been offered, so he sets out to gain as much knowledge as he can, methodically cataloguing each room he comes across and making note of the things he hadn't expected and the things that seem to be missing from his own expectations.

6.0
The lab holds a good deal of his attention once he finds it. Disorganized as it is, there does seem to be a lot to it and he wonders how many people aboard take advantage of a resource like this.

For his part, he wonders what sort of answers he could get with the right equipment and sets to work digging through boxes for anything that looks familiar. He's no engineer, but he's well-versed enough in wiring to know that if he can find the right parts, it's a matter of trial and error if no one more suited can help him.

By the time someone else walks into the lab, Spock is surrounded by neat piles of wires and clamps and gears, all sorted as perfectly as possible. He's no closer to building anything, but at least he's restoring order to the workspace.

"I've taken the liberty of fixing the obvious flaws in this room's system."

9.0 (TW: several deaths)
Spock isn't distracted by the carnival. In fact, he's almost visibly annoyed by it as he walks passed blinking lights and chiming music. This is supposed to be a practice mission, not an unwanted day of "fun".

He walks until the landscape gives way to the graveyard and even then, he only slows when he starts to see familiar names.

It stars when he sees Amanda Grayson and his heart is suddenly in his throat. He can still see his mother's hand slipping away when he closes his eyes. He still feels the loss of her the way he might miss a limb. He takes a breath to steady himself and walks on, renewed reminder of what is at stake for him here, but then there's a flash of something wrong. His mother's body is before him, red blood covering her clothes and a knife sticking out of her back. This hasn't happened, yet...

He tries to run to her. Is she still breathing? But as he falls to his knees next to her, it's Nyota Uhura's grave in front of him now. Odd, because he knows her to be very much alive. Still, he reaches out to trace the letters of her name and as suddenly as it had been her gravestone, it becomes a clear radiation door.

It should be Jim in there. He remembers it too clearly, but this is wrong, because this time it's Nyota fading in front of him. He can't save her. He couldn't save Jim, either.

For what is worth, Spock won't have to do much tidying on one small corner of the lab. It is a very small corner, though, as Jim doesn't take up a lot of space there, and he often piles up his materials and even takes them back to the room with him.

The rest of the lab, however, is... in various degrees of disarray. Most of it is Newt's fault. Okay, at least half of it. Jim's learned to live with it.

But anyway, he doesn't even notice what Spock's doing when he comes in, PADD under his arm, reading glasses in his hand. He doesn't notice, because he's more focused on the fact that it's Spock. Right there, in the middle of the lab, as if it were nothing.

"Spock!" Sorry buddy, but Bones got a hug when he showed up here, and so are you, because it's been over six fucking months and he doesn't give a damn if Vulcans don't hug.

At least he pulls back a couple of seconds later, beaming brightly like a blinding ray of sun. "When did you get here?!"

( Leonard doesn't really hang around the lab unless it's for scaring up equipment that's mysteriously vanished from the pharma center–Ask Viveca for an engraver, he sarcastically notes to himself–so he's pretty preoccupied when he strolls in, expecting to have to cart back a sizeable portion of glassware.

He is not expecting one(1) Vulcan he damn well knows at a workstation, his announcement about scaring the devil out of Leonard.

Bones fumbles his PADD but catches it before it can land on the floor. )

"Captain." There's just the barest hint of surprise in his voice when acknowledges Jim and stands there to receive what he realizes a little too late is going to be a hug.

He doesn't fight the hug or even go more stiff than he'd already been. Though it's not something he might be used to, it's not entirely foreign to him, either. Through no intention of her own, his mother truly had prepared him well enough to live among humans more easily than the average Vulcan.

Besides, several years now beside Jim has gotten Spock used to the liberal use he takes with physicality.

"I arrived approximately two and three-quarters of an hour ago. I was not made aware of your presence, however."

A presence which may complicate Spock's intended plans here.
winscenario: (twenty six.)

[personal profile] winscenario 2021-12-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, good thing Spock's used to it, because Jim's missed him like hell and the physical contact isn't going to stop anytime soon. Well, maybe in a bit. Right now, he's still letting his hands rest on Spock's arms, grinning impossibly wide.

"You're telling me!! I didn't notice— didn't know you'd come in with the latest arrivals. Holy shit."

Excitement turns a little to nervousness, then simmers down to a kind of tension that has him stumbling on what to say for a moment.
